More deaths in Myanmar: Military coup leaders in a cul-de-sac

Reported deaths since the military coup in Myanmar have now reached at least 90 people. At the same time, State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and other politicians of the National League for Democracy (NLD) face house arrests and silencing if they dare to speak out.

Hence, with each passing day, the state apparatus in the hands of the military coup leadership is more oppressive. Similarly, despite increasing deaths, the protesters and opposition forces in Myanmar are unrelenting in their desire to overturn the coup. Therefore, Myanmar is reaching a very dangerous situation that is spiraling out of control.

It appears that the military coup leaders didn’t have a strategy to counter civil disobedience. In other words, people behind the coup are in a self-imposed cul-de-sac because they have no plan B – nor are they seeking a compromise with the NLD to resolve the crisis.

The Western and Islamic international community manipulated the Rakhine humanitarian angle against Myanmar long before the military coup took place. Thus, Bengali Muslims killing and converting Bengali Hindus in Rakhine was swept under the carpet – and the same applies to small minorities who were intimidated by Islamists (ARSA) in Rakhine. Therefore, at no time did Western and Islamic powers concern themselves with Myanmar’s long and painful path to democracy.

Hence the self-imposed cul-de-sac that the coup leaders are now in equally applies to Western democratic and Islamic powers who put State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi into a cul-de-sac of few choices. Therefore, the current passivity of Asian democratic nations must change by a collective response of breaking the cycle of violence that is threatening the long-term stability of Myanmar.

Modern Tokyo Times recently said, “The political crisis generated by the military coup in Myanmar shows no signs of abating. Indeed, with the second death of a member from the National League for Democracy (NLD) dying in custody, the crisis is increasingly becoming more brutal.”

The Western and Islamic international community failed Myanmar when hope abounded under State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi during the democratic transitional period. Thus Western democratic powers need to work with India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and other democratic nations in Asia to reduce the upheaval engulfing Myanmar.

This applies to the economic angle and bringing China on board based on its economic and geopolitical clout. At the moment no major collective international bridge is helping to reduce tensions in Myanmar. Instead, it is more deaths, greater divisions in society, and greater poverty based on the ensuing economic convulsions that are shaking the foundations of hope in this country.
