Secular Syria is being destabilized by feudal monarchies and Western powers utilizing terrorism

Joachim de Villiers and Lee Jay Walker

Modern Tokyo Times

Under the leadership of Bashar al-Assad prior to outside nations meddling in Syria this nation was viewed to be a beacon in the Middle East, when it came to multi-cultural values, the role of women in society and the rights of various religious faiths. Indeed, many European nations like Switzerland could learn from the religious diversity of Syria. This applies to the essential need to provide places of worship for all faiths. Of course, like all societies not everything was perfect because issues related to poverty blight every nation on this planet. Yet given the longevity of the colonial period under the Ottoman Empire and the following intrigues throughout the entire region by France and the United Kingdom: then the development of Syria over the last 40 years is remarkable.

It is not lost on people who know the Middle East that France, the United Kingdom and United States continue to support Saudi Arabia despite the draconian reality of this nation. After all, while Syria focused on state building and allowing the different religious faiths to flourish, it appears that Saudi Arabia uses its energy resources in order to oppress all non-Muslim faiths, minority non-Sunni Muslim faiths, women and secularism. Indeed, even being an atheist in Saudi Arabia is deemed a criminal act whereby severe repercussions will be enacted against the individual.

Therefore, in modern day Saudi Arabia all apostates face death, not one single non-Muslim places of worship is allowed, wearing Christian crosses and reading holy Buddhist scriptures outside is punishable by prison and a host of other brutal realities. One of the other brutal realities applies to Saudi Arabia being a legalized “pedophile state” whereby old men of 60, 70 and older can marry young girls of 8 and 9 years of age. Also, if non-Muslim males have sex with a Muslim female then this could lead to the death penalty. Despite this, and so much more, the nations of the United Kingdom, United States, France, Japan, Germany and a host of other nations, do little to challenge the barbaric reality of Saudi Arabia. Yet clearly Islamic Sharia law under the Saudi version of Islam and institutional discrimination means that this nation is based on apartheid and hatred.

This reality means that human rights, freedom for women, religious freedom, and so forth; means nothing to the democratic world and the Islamic world. It appears that “a collective blanket” is allowed to be covered over Saudi Arabia whereby this nation can even involve itself in international terrorism (irrespective if this applies to covert funding, organizations or wealthy individuals), spreading the dangerous Salafi ideology and supporting sectarianism. Therefore, the sight of seeing ex-President Bush smiling with a sword in Saudi Arabia despite apostates to the Christian faith facing the same punishment; followed by President Obama bowing down to the King of Saudi Arabia despite the reality of this nation; then it is truly baffling and hypocritical to the highest degree.

Turning to events in Syria then the mass media likes to point out that President Bashar al-Assad is from the Alawite faith. This was done in order to use the sectarian angle against Syria but the opposite reality exists. Firstly, Bashar al-Assad married a Sunni Muslim lady who went to a Christian based school in the United Kingdom. Secondly, and much more important, Syria took in millions of refugees from Iraq and other regional nations blighted by conflict. These refugees were overwhelmingly Sunni Muslims followed by Shia Muslims, Christians and other minority faith groups or individuals of no faith. At no point did Syria concern itself with religious affiliation. On the contrary, unlike Turkey which is to blame for much of the bloodshed in Syria and which complains about taking in more refugees that Erdogan helped to create; the Syrian government tried its best with dignity and greater understanding despite having a smaller population and less international support.

Currently the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and various Islamist terrorist groups are intent on spreading sectarianism and terrorism to all the corners of Syria. Sunni Islamic dominated nations which are hostile to Syria, like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and others, are also involved in inciting hatred towards Syria, spreading lies and sending Salafists to spread sectarianism. Despite Erdogan trying the same in Turkey and with many journalists facing prison in this nation; many media outlets refuse to be shackled. Similarly, vast numbers of people in Turkey are very concerned about the war mongering behavior of Erdogan. After all, the Erdogan government is allowing FSA and operative bases in Turkey; enabling the FSA/Islamist groups to use parts of the territory of this nation; allowing sophisticated military hardware to reach the FSA and Islamist terrorist groups; and foreign entities in various murky capacities are entering northern Syria via the land of Turkey alongside international Islamists. On top of this, the same Erdogan government is intent on dragging NATO into the bargain. At the same time, Turkey continues to violate the sovereignty of Cyprus, Iraq and Syria respectively while the same government hopes to decrease the role of secularism internally.

While nobody expects moderation from Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the realms of foreign policy and the same applies to the Salafi and extremist angle of their respective policies. It is remarkable that leading democratic nations are continuing to “sell the soul of democracy and multi-religious values” to the wealthy monarchs of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf in general. This reality means that the shared humanity of Syria and all modern nations is being cut and destroyed in order to appease the whims of wealthy monarchs and the opportunist government of Erdogan.

Countless videos of massacres by the FSA, daily terrorist attacks including car bombings by various Islamist groups, images of al-Qaeda Islamists beheading individuals, killing journalists, cleansing Christians and other religious minorities alongside other brutal deeds, are all being brushed aside in the corridors of power in Paris, London and Washington. The mass media on the whole is openly biased against the government of Syria and language is being manipulated in order to incite hatred. Only a few governments, notably the Russian Federation, have spoken out strongly against international terrorism at all times. Elites in Paris, London and Washington should hang their heads in shame and the same applies to many major media outlets.

Despite all the evil being thrown at Syria the leader of this nation is still open to talks and any area which is constructive and which abides by the wishes of the Syrian people. If only a small minority of the Syrian people were truly against the government of Syria then just like in Egypt, the leadership would have collapsed during the initial stage. However, even in mainly Sunni Aleppo which is also home to many other religious and ethnic groups, the overwhelming majority of people just want the FSA and international terrorists to leave them in peace. At no point can any major media outlet show pictures of Aleppo whereby the majority of citizens are opposed to the Syrian government. On the contrary, when many areas are cleared of terrorists people come flooding back providing the security situation can be maintained.

The values of Syria and the rich mosaic of this nation is not only worth fighting for from the Syrian perspective and the Syrian armed forces point of view. Equally significant, this nation is vital for all people who support religious diversity, a rich mosaic of different cultures and the rights of women. One only needs to look at Saudi Arabia which doesn’t tolerate one single non-Muslim place of worship and whereby women are enslaved to note that Syria is part and parcel of modern civilization. Clearly, al-Qaeda and other Islamists are not interested in religious diversity and the rights of women. Not only this, just like the Taliban destroyed ancient Buddhist statues and whereby Islamists are destroying architecture and holy Sufi shrines in northern Mali and Libya; then not only are Islamists against modernization but they even desire to destroy the ancient civilization of Syria.

It is time to reign in all the forces of evil which are being unleashed against Syria because killing journalists and remaining silent when car bombs are killing people, is a crime against humanity. Therefore, elites in Washington, Paris, London, Ankara, Riyadh and Doha are shaming the nations they represent. Also, why is it that the United Kingdom, United States, France and Turkey are keeping silent about the apartheid state of Saudi Arabia? Similarly, why are the above nations in cohorts with destabilizing Syria alongside international terrorists?

After the terrorist attacks of September 11 the government of Syria helped the United States in many different ways. In the New York Times in 2005 it was stated that “American officials have acknowledged that the Syrian government provided valuable intelligence in the aftermath of Sept. 11.” Ironically, the majority of Sunni Islamists who did September 11 game from Saudi Arabia and clearly the ratlines ran deeper than the American government dared to state. Likewise, today, the “real Syria” shares religious values which belong to the modern world and the same applies to the role of women in society and other areas of shared civilization. Can the same be said about Saudi Arabia and Qatar and their respective Islamist agenda against the people of Syria?

Bashar al-Assad introduced political reforms during the current crisis and time and again he states that political dialogue is the only way forward. Surely the Syrian people deserve an end to international terrorism and the chance for genuine bridges to be built, whereby the Syrian people decide and not outside nations. The daily carnage is sickening and videos of the FSA and Islamists beheading and torturing people is clearly a crime against humanity.

Pierre Leblanc and James Jomo

Modern Tokyo Times

Moody’s credit rating agency hit the headlines after downgrading major banks and financial institutions. These major players were downgraded because of various internal factors but once more it highlights the weakness of the global financial system. This comes on top of negative economic news coming out of America and with the European economic crisis just rolling on from week to week.

In the United Kingdom Barclays, HSBC and the Royal Bank of Scotland were included in the downgrade. This means that banks which have been implicated fear that the recent downgrade will make it more complex for them to borrow money in the commercial arena. Also, the major financial institutions in the United Kingdom are highlighting the continuous economic woes of this nation because it is like “a mirror” of wider problems which continue to hinder the economy.

Greg Bauer at Moody’s commented that “All of the banks affected by today’s actions have significant exposure to the volatility and risk of outsized losses inherent to capital markets activities.”

However, the Royal Bank of Scotland was unhappy about being linked because of recent strengthening of its capital base. Therefore, a statement was issued stating that “The group disagrees with Moody’s ratings change which the group feels is backward-looking and does not give adequate credit for the substantial improvements the group has made to its balance sheet, funding and risk profile.”

Other financial institutions hit by the downgrade apply to the Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, Credit Agricole, BNP Paribas, UBS, Credit Suisse, Royal Bank of Canada and Societe Generale. It is also clear that other international financial institutions have major problems because nations like Spain are grappling with the serious economic downturn in this nation. Yet the names that have been downgraded by Moody’s highlight the current weakness within the financial system because these institutions are among the elite of global finance.

Moody’s also made it known that some of the above banks have been placed under the “negative outlook” system. This means that a further downgrade is possible in the near future and this highlights the reality that state intervention is needed to keep the capitalist cog running during difficult times. Therefore, the possible future downgrade of some institutions on the list is related to governments withholding their support in the future.

Robin Sidel and Aaron Lucchetti in The Wall Street Journal comment that “The downgrades come as unease plagues global markets. Many investors have been skeptical of banks’ capacity to withstand an economic downturn or market shock tied to the European debt crisis.”

“Concerns like these have widened in recent weeks amid signs that Greece may exit the euro zone and that economic growth is slowing in the U.S. and China.”

Citigroup, just like the Royal Bank of Scotland, isn’t happy about the downgrade. Therefore, Citigroup commented that it “strongly disagrees with Moody’s analysis of the banking industry and firmly believes its downgrade of Citigroup is arbitrary and completely unwarranted.”

Of course the downgrade by Moody’s is extremely complex and each institution needs to be viewed on respective merits. Some institutions are hinting that Moody’s is trying to make-up for being over optimistic when the international economic crisis first emerged several years ago. Thereby, Moody’s is now over compensating in the opposite direction. However, overall it is clear that many leading financial institutions are still blighted by many internal weaknesses and rather than “playing football” with the analysis of Moody’s, it is more important to overcome the flaws and risks within each respective institution.

Honda and North American market: new production line in Mexico

Jay Doggett

Modern Tokyo Times

The recent market jitters and global gloom is not preventing Honda from focusing on the future. Recent profits plunged by an astonishing 88% at Honda in the following months after the devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Despite this, Honda, and other companies in the same sector, have moved on from this and began focusing on the future.

Therefore, like any company worth its salt the management structure at Honda are determined to move ahead and focus on the future. The announcement made several months ago about the new $800 million dollar plant which will be built in Mexico is welcome news for all concerned. Also, since the announcement was made further details about future expansion plans have been forthcoming in the international press.

Mexico clearly needs major investment and Honda needs to restructure and focus on the changing car market in North America. Labor costs, investment capital, future production lines, a changing market and other factors, meant that Mexico was deemed to be a perfect solution to meet future goals.

According to the announcement the new plant will employ approximately 3,200 workers. The plan is that by 2014 this car plant will produce around 200,000 cars a year in order to meet the demands of the North American car market.

At the same time it was also announced that production will be increased in some plants in both America and Canada. Some plants were reduced in North America after the earthquake and tsunami devastated parts of Japan. However, a second-shift will come into effect at the Alliston plant which is located in Canada and shifts will be increased in plants in Indiana and Ohio in America.

Smaller vehicles will be built in the new plant in Mexico which will open for production by 2014 and emphasis is being put on fuel-efficient vehicles. The plant will also help the local economy in the state of Guanajuato.

Honda is focused on future market projections and they are hoping that the new plant will maintain and enhance their strong presence in North America. If history is viewed about Honda then it appears that the new production line will reinvigorate their market competitiveness in this important part of the world.

Therefore, in a year which witnessed so much destruction and created major obstacles to overcome after the earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, it is clear that internal mechanisms at Honda were prepared and could adapt rapidly. Given this, Honda once more showed the world that dynamism applies to this company. Future projections in North America also highlight that Honda desires to remain one step ahead.

Have you seen them?

Stephen Watkins’ two sons were abducted by his estranged wife. Police believe they are in Poland. Watkins had custody, and tried to prevent the abduction. He has not seen his two son’s since 2009. Watkins is still searching for his two son’s.

I have had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Stephen Watkins more than once over the telephone about his missing children and his fight to find them. It is important if you have any information or know of anyone who has any information about his two son’s to please notify the authorities immediately. You may also contact Mr. Watkins by clicking on any of his links below.

Mr. Watkins ex-wife broke the law by abducting his two boy’s and fleeing the country. His ex-wife is on the “Most Wanted” High Alert and a lead investigator has been assigned to help Mr. Watkins find his children. It is important that we help to reunite our missing children back to their families. Together, we can make it happen.

Other details about Stephen Watkins have been issued in the Canadian press and this will be expressed below in order for people to fully understand the severity of his case. With every passing day his anxiety grows and it is vital that fresh leads are found.

Canada AM – News & Interviews – Canadian / US Border Security Issues:

An Ontario father whose two sons were allegedly abducted by their non-custodial mother says he had fears that something might happen well before they disappeared more than two years ago.”

Stephen Watkins said he wrote letters to Passport Canada to have his Children’s Passports canceled but was unsuccessful. The Ontario’s Family Responsibility Office finally “Canceled” his ex-wife’s passport and “Suspended” her driver’s license through appropriate Provincial Enforcement Measures due to over a year of unpaid child support.”

Watkins said the issue has exposed a major security issue. Her passport had been cancelled after she failed to pay child support, but she still managed to cross the U.S. border and fly to Europe.

At the time, Canadian citizens could cross a U.S. land border with only a driver’s license and birth certificate.

U.S. Border customs only conducts VISUAL inspections of Canadian Passports as there is no shared database between Canada and the United States.

Edyta’s Drivers License were also confirmed “Suspended” by Ontario’s Family Responsibility Office along with her “Canceled” / “Revoked” Canadian Passport prior to the children’s abduction.

US Homeland Security confirmed with York Regional Police that 3-Canadian Passports were used.

“There were lots of signs and clues that told me there was a chance that they could be abducted,” Watkins told CTV’s Canada AM on Tuesday. “Going through court when there is parental alienation happening is a clue. And obviously where there is a threat — I received a threat that I would never see my boys again — that is another clue.”

Watkins last saw his children on March 6, 2009; Alexander was seven years old and Christopher was four. Stephen Watkins was granted final sole custody by the Ontario Family Courts on January 26, 2009. The family courts allowed his ex-wife to visit on weekends.

Police believe they were abducted to Europe by their non-custodial mother Edyta Watkins. York Regional Police say her father drove her and her sons across the border into the U.S., where they boarded a plane from Detroit to Frankfurt, Germany.

Det. Const. Jesse Mann said they believe she has since moved her boys to Poland, her country of origin, but need proof before local authorities will come on board.

“It is difficult to determine how engaged the Polish authorities are because all the information goes through the appropriate channels, RCMP and Interpol,” Mann said.

A Canada-wide arrest warrant has been issued for Edyta Watkins, who goes by several other names, and she also appears on the RCMP’s most wanted list.

A world-wide Interpol “RED NOTICE” has also been issued by the country of Canada for the apprehension of Edyta Ustaszewski Watkins and her extradition and “YELLOW NOTICE” for the Watkins Missing Children

“It is so difficult, you can’t imagine, not knowing where they are or if they are alive. We see all these things in the news, there are tons of parental abductions, but we know bad things are happening.

“Finding them is really important,” Watkins said.

As in the case of Serbia twelve years ago, Canada’s air force is once again bombing a country presenting no threat to the safety or security of our country. In fact, we are at war. There has been no declaration of war. There has been no serious attempt to intervene peacefully to help resolve the conflict.

There has been no debate in our Parliament. There was no suggestion of sending a mission to Libya to assess the situation on the ground. More seriously, there has been no satisfactory explanation of what the bombing is designed to do and little idea of who it is we are fighting for.

The United Nations Security Council has authorized a no-fly zone to be enforced over Libyan skies but it is not clear what exactly this means. In the meantime some Western nations – including Canada – have interpreted it to mean they are authorized to attack and destroy Qaddafi’s forces fighting against an armed rebellion to overthrow the dictator. Other countries do not agree. Among them are: Germany, Russia, China, India, Brazil and, more importantly, the Arab League.

Some have argued the aim is to prevent the Libyan despot, Muammar Qaddafi, from slaughtering thousands of his people, but there has been no evidence that this was his intention before the bombing took place.

President Sarkozy of France has made it clear that, as far as the French are concerned, the intervention is to change the regime and replace Qaddafi. France has already recognized the rebels in Benghazi as the legitimate representatives of the Libyan people. This extraordinary step seems to rule out any possibility of negotiating with Qaddafi for a peaceful solution to the armed struggle. It also implies what amounts to a demand for his unconditional surrender – a demand that almost always leaves your opponent no choice but to fight to the bitter end.

As for the United States we are not sure what President Obama has in mind. Initially, he was hesitant to lead his country into yet another war against a Muslim nation. However, a hyped-up media and a number of his close advisors urged him to intervene militarily. Having done so, he was anxious to at least pretend that the lead in the continuing conflict would be taken by others, and the “others” now seem to have been designated as some of the NATIO countries – minus Germany and Turkey.

The waves of unrest and upheavals in the Arab world have created great hope but at the same time potential danger. Who or what might replace the deposed despots is not known, One thing seems clear, none of the Muslim countries involved is ready for, or even desires to have, western style democracy.

For the most part the values of these Muslim countries are not western values, and lurking in the background is the menacing threat of religious extremism. This may be especially true in Libya, which has produced a high proportion of suicide bombers and mujahedeen fighters in Afghanistan and Iraq.

As a general rule it is unwise to take sides in a civil war unless our own vital interests are at stake. What is taking place in Libya today is a civil war and we find ourselves playing the role of air force for the rebels. Unfortunately, we really have no idea of who they are or what they represent. Moreover, we do not know where the conflict will lead, how long it might last or the broader implications for the region after the fighting ends.

All of this fiasco has turned out to be a colossal mess and is unlikely to end well. This is not unusual when the excuse for intervention is based primarily on so-called humanitarian reasons.

Military intervention for humanitarian reasons is not a new phenomenon. Even Hitler justified his invasion of Czechoslovakia on the grounds that the ethnic Germans in the Sudetenland were being mistreated and abused by their fellow Czechoslovaks.

The concept has, however, found renewed popularity following the failure to prevent the Rwanda genocide. It gained momentum during the civil war in Bosnia and later in Kosovo, when charges of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity were levelled against the Serbs. The NATO intervention in Bosnia and Kosovo – despite strong evidence to the contrary – continues to be hailed as highly successful operations.

The Balkan experience led directly to the new doctrine of the “responsibility to protect” or R2P – the right to intervene in a sovereign state to protect populations there who are at risk. R2P has become the new term for humanitarian intervention and has laid out the conditions to be met for such intervention. The key provision of this doctrine is that if a state is failing to protect its citizens from mass atrocities, and peaceful measures to do so are not working, the international community has the responsibility to intervene at first diplomatically, and then more coercively, and at last resort, with military force.

It is worth noting that the United Nations Charter does not permit the use of military force for humanitarian intervention. However, in 2005 the General Assembly did adopt the principle of R2P, provided that the parties to the dispute “first of all seek a solution through negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, resort to regional agencies or arrangements, or other peaceful means of their own choice.”

If such peaceful means have been tried but have failed then and only then can the United Nations Security Council authorize the use of force. Clearly none of these peaceful methods were tried before the decision was taken to bomb Qaddafi’s forces.

R2P has many loyal advocates both in Canada and the United States. In Canada, our former foreign minister, Lloyd Axworthy, and retired General Romeo Dallaire are leading proponents of the doctrine. In the United States, one of its foremost advocates is Samantha Powers, author, foreign policy analyst, and now member of the US National Security Council. Powers was appointed to the NSC by President Obama and is said to have strongly influenced the President to intervene in Libya.

Powers exemplifies the potential dangers of having a doctrine that invites the violation of national sovereignty on the basis of alleged human rights abuse. For human rights proponents like her there are few conflict situations that do not deserve military intervention. In 2002, during the second Palestinian Intifada, she pushed hard for US military intervention against Israel with the aim of establishing and protecting a Palestinian state.

It is fortunate that R2P is not a mandatory obligation for the international community. It provides a framework for intervention and guidelines to be followed but it remains the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council to authorize military intervention in a sovereign state. The veto power remains a last resort to prevent the violation of sovereignty for whatever reason.

There is great danger in assuming that the western democratic nations can exercise wise judgment about when they should intervene in a conflict taking place in developing countries. There is even more danger in assuming that the intervention is motivated by real humanitarian concerns and not for selfish political or foreign policy objectives as was clearly the case in Bosnia and Kosovo.

The R2P concept is too easily high-jacked by leaders who see an opportunity to gain political mileage at home by playing the role of protecting the rights of suffering victims in far away places. If the country to be punished is headed by a dictator and is not too powerful to take on, then the risk is worth taking.

If the intervention can be in concert with other allied nations so much the better. For Canada, acting as part of NATO becomes particularly important as it was in the bombing of Serbia, and is now in the case of Libya. Quite apart from the substance of the issues involved Canada feels it must go along with our NATO partners whether the military action is justified or not. Our political leaders do not need to consult Parliament because NATO has decided the matter for us.

This is not a satisfactory situation for a democratic country. Other NATO member countries do not always feel obliged to follow the NATO lead if they do not agree with a military solution to the problem. Greece refused to take part in the bombing of Serbia in 1999 and Germany has refused to join its NATO partners in the Libya intervention.

Going to war is a serious business and it should be only done with the full agreement of the Parliament of Canada after a vote in the House of Commons. It is well to remember that at the outbreak of the Second World War it was only after debate in the House of Commons and a vote that Canada declared war on Germany.

Decisions about war and peace that affect the safety and security of our armed services and citizenry are the paramount expression of a nation’s sovereignty. Canada should not abdicate that responsibility in any circumstances.
