Japan Fashion News and Takashimaya Department Store

Hiroshi Saito and Kanako Itamae

Modern Tokyo Times

Takashimaya Co. is one of the major department stores in Japan and despite the challenging international economy they have plans to expand within Asia over the next few years. Currently the internal economy of Japan appears to be picking up based on the policies of the Bank of Japan in early 2013. Despite this, many areas of the international economy remains sluggish but irrespective of this Takashimaya plans to expand. Positive early results related to sales in the first few months of 2013 in Japan also point to a nice springboard for future international expansion.

This company was founded in 1829 and since this time many changes have impacted on Takashimaya. Like any major company within such a competitive sector then many major highs and lows have happened. At the same time periods of low growth and stagnation have also been a reality. This often coincided with the internal mechanisms of the Japanese economy. However, despite everything fresh ideas and more international knowledge meant that new openings have maintained this company through thick and thin.

It is difficult to imagine the luxury fashion floors within this elegant department store and then equate this with being founded during the Edo period. Yet this is the richness of this exquisite department store which originates from Kyoto.

In the modern world of high octane fashion and enormous competition the Takashimaya department store can be found throughout Japan. International wise they have stores in France, Singapore and Taiwan. The American adventure wasn’t successful. However, like all pitfalls any good company worth its salt will reinvigorate itself and this is what Takashimaya appears to be able to do. After all, the longevity of this company speaks for itself.

Takashimaya’s China venture whereby around three to four department stores were planned between the middle of 2012 until 2016 did raise some alarm bells last year because of negative events between China and Japan. This applies to the ongoing tensions between China and Japan, attacks against Japanese companies during heightened nationalist sentiments last year, the slowing economy in China towards the end of 2012 and fears that the market is already saturated. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if Takashimaya changes some of their long-term ambitions in relation to this but in early 2013 the situation appears more stable than in the middle of 2012. Of course, Takashimaya will continue to monitor this issue which is outside their remit because of the political dimension between China and Japan.

According to internal analysts within Takashimaya they forecast an internal shortfall which will be matched by projected growth in their international stores and within its group business. The President of Takashimaya, Koji Suzuki, informed The Asahi Shimbum in 2012 that “We plan to invest to renovate department stores in Japan, but we will not be able to keep (domestic department store) sales from falling…We will maintain sales with our overseas and group businesses.”

In Tokyo Fashion Daily the highly respected Timothy Schepis reports that “For the six month period from May to August 2012, Takashimaya will report a 16% increase in consolidated operating profit of 10.5 billion yen…The increase in consolidated operating profits comes amid sluggish sales at Japan’s department stores – still Takashimaya’s operating revenue also increased 2% to finish at 420 billion yen for the same six month period.”

However, in early 2013 Takashimaya appears to be doing much better than thought possible by the president of this company in the middle of 2012. Modern Tokyo Times states in another article about Takashimaya that “…it was reported that a bullish 17% profit margin occurred between April and November 2012. Now it is apparent that consolidated operating profit for the entire year was 20% and with recent figures indicating further growth in March 2013, then it is hoped that this economic growth is pointing in the right direction for the entire sector in Japan. After all, in recent times the sale figures were often sluggish at Takashimaya because of the overall economy being negative, internal issues, unable to keep costs down, this sector being extremely competitive and other important factors. However, now it would appear that Takashimaya is turning the corner.”

Takashimaya department stores are famous because of the exquisite brands which can be found in all their respective stores. Therefore, this company is hoping to expand within China, south-east Asia and Vietnam. If you adore luxury fashion, a whole array of quality products, scrumptious food and so much more, then clearly Takashimaya will cater for you.

The different vibes of Tokyo fashion are always in heavy demand both internally and internationally therefore the Style Arena website is a must place to check continuously for latest images and news. Images on Style Arena highlight the “real Tokyo” and the interactive knowledge of the respective individuals being highlighted provides powerful information. This applies to the current trends and favorite boutiques of each respective individual. Therefore, Style Arena provides a stylish fresh approach with complete professionalism at all times.

Style Arena http://www.style-arena.jp is currently highlighting Japanese Punk vibes in the New Tribe sector. Once more, each image highlights the stunning and changing fashion vibes of a craze which is reaching the streets of Tokyo from an independent angle. This complements the mainstream reality of much of Style Arena which focuses on powerful fashion districts within buzzing Tokyo.

The five main fashion districts whereby photos are uploaded frequently apply to Daikanyama, Ginza, Harajuku, Omotesando and Shibuya. These five delightful districts provide a lovely ambience to Style Arena based on the distinctiveness of each fashion zone.

After all, the buzzing independence of Harajuku is internationally famous therefore vast numbers of fashion lovers all over the world are fascinated by the unique vibes emanating from this fashion district. Meanwhile, Shibuya is also recognized for being a vibrant youth district for fashion lovers and whereby “Shibuya girls” are known by their own special styles and delightful haircuts. Of course, in Harajuku and Shibuya you also have exquisite mainstream fashion and a plethora of boutiques catering for different styles.

Daikanyama is very different because this fashion district is quaint and off the beaten track for international fashion lovers who visit Tokyo for the first time. However, within Tokyo this lovely district is known for independent fashion styles, elegance and having a warm atmosphere. Also, the lifestyle of Daikanyama is highly desirable therefore this place is in high demand when it comes to a place to call home. Therefore, by providing images of individuals who adore the Daikanyama fashion scene, it is interesting to note the differences in favorite boutiques and trends among some of the people interviewed,

Ginza and Omotesando are two districts which are known for the crème de la crème of Japanese and international fashion. This reality means that you will find many adorable European and American boutiques which mix freely with exquisite Japanese boutiques. These two fashion districts are extremely wealthy and the architecture is also another lovely feature of Ginza and Omotesando.

Tokyoites are fully aware that Harajuku, Omotesando and Shibuya naturally flow together alongside Aoyama which is another amazing fashion district. In the backstreets of Omotesando and Harajuku you will also find independent styles and the vibes of American street fashion can be felt heavily in the backstreets of Omotesando. Therefore, you have a lovely synergy to the entire area which links these fantastic fashion zones into one enormous fashion hub.

Daikanyama is not so far away from Shibuya by train therefore Ginza is the one fashion district which is highlighted by Style Arena which stands out by its location. Like already stated, Ginza and Omotesando share many similar themes when it comes to high fashion. However, with the interplay between Omotesando and Harajuku being so strong and the same applies to Shibuya in terms of distance; then the focus on Ginza does provide another lovely angle to Style Arena.

In another article by Modern Tokyo Times about Style Arena it was stated that “Style Arena is extremely easy on the eye and clearly all the appropriate information is provided. This applies to respective individuals who highlight their favorite fashion companies and other important areas. The photo images also highlight many different angles and clearly great care is being taken. However, it is the easy available information which provides the “in boutiques” which is a huge winner.”

Overall, Style Arena is a must place to visit for fashion lovers who adore the rich angle of this sector in Tokyo. At all times this website is updated with lovely images and latest news whereby other fashion districts are highlighted. The user friendly nature of Style Arena and the language angle which reaches out internationally sums up the entire professionalism of this exquisite website.

Japan fashion News and Benetton: Will Smaller Stores Impact on Profits in 2013?

Kanako Itamae and Michel Lebon

Modern Tokyo Times

Benetton entered the Japanese market over 30 years ago therefore this company is firmly established throughout Japan. It is clear that Benetton believed in the viability of the land of the rising sun before the vast majority of other fashion companies which entered at a later date. However, the enormous competition throughout this sector means that reinvigoration is needed at all times because fashion trends are never static. Likewise, new boutiques, vibes and the growing power of social media keeps on changing this sector.

Last year Benetton decided on changing part of its strategy in Japan in order to increase sales and profit margins. This new policy was focused on opening new smaller stores in order to maintain the visibility of Benetton and to attract new customers which are passing through major train stations. Given the power of major train stations in relation to the fashion scene in Japan then clearly having smaller stores in and around significant train stations does makes complete sense.

Alessandro Benetton, President of the highly acclaimed Benetton Group, stated in 2012 that “I would call them kiosks more than stores.” However, within the powerful fashion scene of major cities throughout Japan then clearly these “small stores” have remarkable appeal with other major fashion outlets. This reality means that Benetton is changing with the times and meeting the natural conditions of Japan.

If individuals don’t fully understand the Japanese market then it is easy to not know the dynamics of fashion within major train stations or connected directly. For example, in Ikebukuro and Shinjuku in Tokyo these train stations are awash with fashion. This applies to inside the train station or being connected with these stations which serve millions of people daily. Therefore, you will find many adorable boutiques within these two train stations, which are also connected with major department stores like Lumine and so many others which share the same environment. The same applies to other major cities throughout Japan like Kobe, Nagoya, Osaka, Sendai and a host of other powerful cities.

Of course the Benetton Group is firmly established within Japan and internationally because of the adorable fashion products they produce. Yet the need for visibility, convenience and adapting to the ever changing market in Japan is essential. For this reason the Benetton Group is hoping to re-connect with established customers and new clients who shop freely within or close by major train stations, by appealing through smaller shops.

Benetton stores which are already firmly established throughout major cities in Japan will hopefully gain from the knock-on-effect of greater visibility and attracting new customers. It is reported that the first new small store will open in trendy Shibuya in Tokyo.

Timothy Schepis (http://twitter.com/tokyofashndaily) at Tokyo Fashion Daily comments that “Even with 4 billion yen in sales in 2011 Benetton Japan’s sales are still struggling. To help counter their decreasing sales Benetton will open smaller, more efficient retail doors selling the minimum with the maximum exposure.”

Benetton Japan is being fully supported back in Italy because it is clear that reinvigoration is needed. It is hoped that the new smaller stores will generate a fresh impetus alongside creating greater visibility. Therefore, many people are waiting for the results of this concept later in 2013 when fiscal results are announced. Hopefully, Benetton is on a winner because this company is part and parcel of the fashion scene within Japan.

Tomoko Hara and Sarah Deschamps

Modern Tokyo Times

Ron Herman just increased its clout in Japan further by opening two new stores in two trendy areas in Tokyo and Osaka. The Grand Front Osaka was bound to hit a chord with exquisite companies and clearly Ron Herman didn’t want to pass such a golden opportunity. Therefore, Ron Herman’s first venture into the fashion scene of Osaka is based in this amazing new concept which is located in the heart of this amazing city. Meanwhile, in Tokyo a new Ron Herman store opened in Tokyo Midtown in the Roppongi area.

These two new stores opened in late April 2013 and this brings the number to eight stores in trendy Japan for Ron Herman. This delightful company is run by Sazaby League, Ltd. Therefore, while venturing into the Roppongi fashion scene is interesting by itself, it more significant that this brand is now open to the public in Osaka.

Osaka fashion and style is amazing because you have ample fashion districts in this ultra modern part of Japan. Indeed, if fashion companies are intent on developing throughout Japan then clearly Tokyo and Osaka are the prime cities because of their collective economic power and ample fashion districts. It is hoped that the venture into Grand Front Osaka will be the start of something fresh in this part of Japan.

Zara Home also opened a new store in Grand Front Osaka because of the prestigious nature of this new concept in the heart of this flourishing city. This company is firmly established in Europe, Middle East, North America and South America and they also have a major presence in China and Japan. The international nature of Zara Home is abundantly clear because they have so many stores open throughout the world.

A PR representative of this company stated that “Grand Front is a favorable location with attractive Umeda clientele. One ‘home’ can be completed with ZARA HOME items.” For individuals who have never visited Umeda and the surrounding fashion districts then clearly this area must be put high on your list if you have the opportunity to visit this part of Japan. The buzzing vibes of Shinsaibashi, Namba and Umeda are truly exuberant because of exquisite fashion which runs throughout many fashion districts in vibrant Osaka.

Zara Home also opened a new store in LaLaport Yokohama in order to enhance their growing influence within the Japanese market. Lifestyle lovers will certainly enjoy this new store because of the quality products on sale and the array of imagination which goes into their respective stores.

Osaka and Tokyo Fashion: Hotbed for Fashion in Mega Train Stations

Sarah Deschamps and Hiroshi Saito

Modern Tokyo Times

In Japan you have a very natural relationship between modern and powerful train stations and the world of fashion. Indeed, many major train stations in Tokyo and Osaka, and throughout Japan, are real eye-openers to the world of fashion in the land of the rising sun. Therefore, for individuals who travel to Japan for the first time, then this reality will really stand out.

This relationship doesn’t only apply to renting retail space. More important, many major train companies own or joint-own major Japanese department stores. For example, Lumine department store was established by JR East in order to utilize the best of both worlds. After all, when you have millions of people passing through the main stations of Tokyo then this makes perfect sense.

Shinjuku and Ikebukuro are major train stations in Tokyo whereby millions of people pass through every day. People either work in these vibrant districts or individuals go shopping in these powerful parts of Tokyo. Likewise, vast numbers of people are passing through or internal and external tourists are visiting these trendy districts for various reasons.

In Ikebukuro you will find the stylish Lumine department store very close to Tobu department store on the west side, while on the east side of the train station complex you will find Seibu department store. All these amazing department stores are connected to the respective train lines which serve this train station. Within all these department stores you will find adorable fashion which applies to Japanese and international boutiques. Also, in Tobu department store and Seibu department store you can by a whole array of different products.

Likewise, in the buzzing city of Osaka you will find amazing shopping malls within major train stations or connected to various train stations within the same complex. For example in Namba, which is one of the most stylish areas in this amazing city, the fashion angle is simply fantastic and extremely trendy. Therefore, it is clear that places like Namba Walk caters for exquisite fashion and for people to enjoy eating at the many restaurants within the same vicinity. This feature is clearly popular because vast numbers of people do their shopping within Namba Walk and other amazing shopping malls which can be found within the same environment.

In Shinjuku in Tokyo major train companies like the Odakyu Group and many others like Lumine, all vie for a slice of the fashion market. The Odakyu train company was originally focused on the train sector but in time this company changed alongside the usage of the name. Now in modern times the Odakyu Group can be found in the train sector, finance, real estate, personal storage, bus service, fiber optic networking and a whole array of other areas related to business. Given the powerful nature of this company, then the Odakyu department store caters for the crème de la crème of fashion boutiques and other stores related to lifestyle.

Therefore, within the Odakyu department store in Shinjuku you will find amazing companies like Cartier, Chanel, Shiseido, Jill Stuart, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co, Omega, Seiko, Shu Uemura and so much more. These companies provide places for people to shop for exquisite fashion, amazing watch companies and exquisite cosmetic brands.

Not only this, but the same Odakyu Group owns My Lord in Shinjuku which caters for trendy young fashion lovers. This means that the Odakyu Group is providing two fantastic department stores which are aimed at different age groups and fashion styles. Therefore, this shows the innovation of fashion and the strong connection with the train sector which understands the need to diversify. Similarly, you will find Lumine department stores within the Shinjuku train complex and other companies which mix both sectors.

Also, within walking distance outside you will have an amazing fashion angle within Tokyo and Osaka respectively – and throughout Japan. For example, in trendy Osaka you will find amazing shopping malls within and surrounding Umeda train station. Therefore, the ultra-modern train stations in major cities throughout Japan are connected with the fashion sector and being places to relax.

In the United Kingdom you have major train stations like Euston in London, Manchester Piccadilly, Paddington in London and so forth. However, while you will find some areas to buy fashion the scale is much smaller and not based on major international brands. Also, local people don’t want to relax in these train stations and go shopping, eat scrumptious food and so forth. However, in Tokyo and Osaka it is very different because major train stations are powerful fashion hubs and places whereby you can relax. Indeed, within the train station complex of Ikebukuro and connected with the Lumine and Tobu department stores, you also have a cinema within the same shared environment.

Overall, major train stations are powerful hubs of fashion. Also, in Tokyo it is clear that major train groups have established their own department stores in order to utilize the people who use their respective train companies. Obviously, because major train stations like Shinjuku and Ikebukuro serve several different train companies, then passengers of all these train networks can utilize the fashion angle of several train companies. Likewise, powerful department stores that are solely based within the fashion sector also make the most of the same environment.

Tokyo and Osaka Fashion News: Alexander McQueen, Forever 21 and Jacob Cohen

Michel Lebon and Tomoko Hara

Modern Tokyo Times

Tokyo and Osaka are amazing mega-cities whereby the fashion and beauty scene is always changing. Osaka is a hidden gem within Japan because this amazing city doesn’t hit the lofty international headlines like Tokyo. However, Osaka and the conurbation area which incorporates Kobe is one enormous zone which can compete favorably with all major international zones of trade and commerce.

The fashion and beauty angle in Osaka is equally amazing and each year you have new amazing developments in the realm of modern architecture. Tokyo is the usual stepping stone for international boutiques to enter the Japanese fashion sector but Osaka is powerful in its own right.

Forever 21 opened its first flagship store in Osaka on April 20 this month in the Dotonbori district. The new venture witnesses the first business dealing between Forever 21 and Parco and this bodes well for future dealings. Internationally, Forever 21 is currently blessed with 500 stores. Therefore, given the power of Osaka within the Kansai region then the new Dotonbori opening may become a future stepping stone for this stylish company within this vibrant part of Japan.

Jacob Cohen which is a stylish jeanswear and upper sportswear company opened today in the trendy Roppongi district. The sales manager, Marco Tiburzi, stated that “We also aim at increasing our presence in new markets such as former Russian countries as well as growing in the Far East. We are interested in expanding, though we want to do it gradually without going against our own identity.” Once more, it would appear that Tokyo is the stepping stone for not only Osaka but also for China because it is known that Jacob Cohen hopes to enter the Chinese market over the next few years. Roppongi is known for its international flavor therefore this district appears to be a natural suit for Jacob Cohen.

In the same fashion district of Roppongi a new Alexander McQueen accessories store opened to the general public earlier this month. The Alexander McQueen brand is famous because of exquisite elegance. Therefore, the new store will sell a variety of adorable goods ranging from bags, leather goods, jewelry, scarves and other lovely products.

Tokyo and Osaka fashion is always forward thinking and this applies to the Japanese and international angle. Also, with Planet Blue also entering the Roppongi fashion scene, then clearly many developments are taking place in this vibrant district alongside the mentioned openings of Alexander McQueen and Jacob Cohen. In the meantime new mega developments in Osaka are ongoing in many sectors and clearly the fashion angle is a lovely way to escape all the stresses of life.

Japan Fashion News in 2013: Strong Sales at Department Stores in March

Sarah Deschamps and Kanako Itamae

Modern Tokyo Times

The Japan Department Stores Association announced more positive news for department stores in this country. It was reported that annual sales at major department stores grew collectively by 3.9% in March 2013. This follows on from the first two months of 2013 which also showed economic growth. However, the growth figure in March outstrips the two previous months and clearly the current year is starting on a positive note.

In Tokyo the sales growth from the previous period twelve months ago was a very vibrant 6.4% in March. The figure in February was a respectable 2.5% but clearly the pace of growth is currently growing. Of course, the saying says that “one swallow doesn’t make a summer” therefore it is too early to predict the rest of 2013. In saying that, the signs look positive because within the political and banking structures of Japan you are witnessing fresh signs of hope.

Major cities like Kobe, Osaka, Nagoya, Sendai, Yokohama, and many others, highlight their own vibrant features within the fashion and retail sector in Japan. Emphasis and focus is often aimed at the Tokyo market but this distorts the real picture because the economic zone linking Kobe and Osaka is extremely powerful. Also, Kobe often creates new vibes before they enter the Tokyo scene. Similarly, in Osaka the vibes of Shinsaibashi, Namba, and other powerful districts, are a wonder to behold because of the notable sophistication and strong independent vibes which exist throughout this mega-city.

Takashimaya Department Store is reported to have witnessed a healthy internal sales figure of 5% in March from the previous year. This follows on from reaching a consolidating profit of 20% for this company in 2012. Takashimaya is also hoping to expand further in Asia therefore a new vibrancy is on the horizon within this company.

At the same time new international companies are entering the Japanese market. For example Steven Alan and Planet Blue have just entered the trendy Tokyo fashion scene in 2013. Therefore, with new international developments shaping the fashion scene in Japan it clearly highlights that this nation remains to be a major magnet for global fashion companies. In a sense, the fashion sector often beats to a different drum in Japan because quality is highly valued at all times therefore luxury brands value the Japanese “apple pie” greatly.

Timothy Schepis at (http://www.tokyofashiondaily.com/) Tokyo Fashion Daily states that “Driving sales across Japan`s department stores in March was women`s apparel, jewelry, and timepieces which increased a huge 34.9%.”

It is hoped that the current economic outlook within the fashion and department sector will continue to flourish in the following months. If this happens, then a new vibrant period will hopefully trigger new independent trends and enable up and coming designers to get a fair crack at the whip. Of course, nothing can be taken for granted but the signs look optimistic.

The Tokyo fashion and beauty scene is always evolving and this applies to new companies entering the market, companies expanding and a host of other areas. It is often difficult to keep up because of the wealth of information. Therefore, this article is focused on recent developments within the fashion and beauty scene of buzzing Tokyo. Also, for the latest news then (http://en.fashion-headline.com/) Fashion Headline is a very powerful website to visit for the latest vibes of what is happening in Tokyo and throughout Japan.

Dr Denim from Sweden will open up a pop-up store in the iconic Laforet Harajuku from the middle of April to the ending of July in 2013. This will be the first time for Dr Denim to enter the vibrant Tokyo fashion scene and not surprisingly they picked the vibes of Harajuku. Denim pants for men and women from various stylish angles will be available to Tokyoites. The enormous pull of this company can be seen by the 1.6 million sales of their “KISSY” jeans which proved such a success for the female market of this company.

Aesop from Australia continues to expand in Japan and a new store was recently opened in Shibuya. The districts of Shibuya and Harajuku are known internationally because of the vibrant youthful nature of both fashionable districts therefore it is easy to understand the logic of Dr Denim and Aesop. However, within these two amazing fashion districts you have ample space for the crème de la crème of Japanese and international boutiques – and other companies in the cosmetic sector and so forth – which cater for different ages. After all, the closeness of Omotesando and Aoyama means that you have many overlaps whereby the target market changes quickly.

On the Aesop website it states that “Aesop was established in Melbourne in 1987 with a quest to create a range of superlative products for the skin, hair and body. We are committed to using both plant-based and laboratory-made ingredients of the highest quality and proven efficacy – particularly those with the greatest anti-oxidant properties.”

Planet Blue from trendy Los Angeles opened its first select shop in the district of Roppongi Hills. This part of Tokyo is where you have many embassies located and also at night the international mix can be felt deeply. Therefore, Roppongi Hills is famous for many exquisite companies and the nightlife scene also attracts many individuals. It is known that famous people like Sharon Stone cherish this company and the vibes of America can be felt strongly within many parts of the Tokyo fashion scene. The famous Malibu lifestyle and innovative thought patterns are also connected within the fashion scene of Los Angeles therefore Roppongi Hills seems like a perfect match to open their first shop in Japan called “Planet blue world.”

If you adore luxury cosmetics and other products related to this sector then the Parco Department Store in Kichijoji is well worth a visit because the “Isetan MiRROR Make & Cosmetics” area boasts many exquisite companies. Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings produced this luxury concept in early 2012 which witnessed the opening of this idea in Lumine Department Store in Shinjuku. The recently opened venture in Kichijoji is the sixth to open and clearly Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings believes that this new angle is a major step to enhancing the reputation of this vibrant company.

In Kichijoji you have thirteen major Japanese and international brands within “Isetan MiRROR Make & Cosmetics” in Parco. This applies to the brands of Chanel, Yves Saint-Lauren, Addiction, Isetan MiRROR beaute, Lancome, NARS, KOBAKO, Global Shiseido, CLINQUE, CLARINS, Helena Rubinstein, bareMinerals and Laura Mercier.

Other important developments are also happening and this is the beauty of the vibrant Tokyo scene. Also, with many department stores in Tokyo starting 2013 in a good vein when it comes to sales, then you have a nice fresh impetus to the buzzing fashion and beauty sectors.

Luxury Fashion in Tokyo and Osaka

Hiroshi Saito and Sarah Deschamps

Modern Tokyo Times

The luxury fashion market in Japan is internationally famous because this country is known to consume more items than any other nation. This reality means that major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Nagoya, Sendai, Yokohama and many others are awash with the crème de la crème of major international and Japanese luxury brands. Department stores also play a major role because some of the finest stores in the world are found in Japan. Therefore, with positive economic signs on the horizon in Japan based on strong sales for many retail companies in early 2013; then many new developments should open-up throughout the remainder of the year.

Indeed, one amazing feature of the Japanese luxury fashion market is that despite negative economic growth it appears that this sector ticks to a different tune. Areas like Kobe and Osaka are extremely close thereby both major cities enhance each other. These two cities also have a very vibrant fashion scene which caters from the most exclusive boutiques in the world to mainstream fashion. Also, Osaka is a major city by itself and when connected with Kobe then you have one continuous huge fashion market.

In another article by Modern Tokyo Times it was stated about Osaka that “If you really want to feel a special vibe then a visit to the Midosuji Boulevard is a must. This area is blessed with being tree-lined and you have a really nice feel to this part of Osaka. Also, if you have time on your hands then the mixture between this area and Namba is extremely illuminating. On top of this, you are blessed with so many amazing boutiques to visit and the cultural changes between the Midosuji Boulevard and the 24 hour vibrancy of Namba highlights the power of culture in Osaka.”

“A partial list of companies based in Shisaibashi and the surrounding area includes Chanel, Gucci, Dior, Coach, Armani, Fendi, Rolex, Cartier, Dolce & Gabbana, Diesel, Louis Vuitton, Omega, Versace, Yves Saint-Laurent, Dunhill, BVLGARI, Givenchy, Beams, H&M, Ships, Uniqlo, United Arrows, Franck Muller, and many others including Benneton. This partial list highlights the high octane nature of fashion in this adorable part of Osaka and if you are a fashion guru then this area is a must place to visit.”

Meanwhile, in Tokyo you have several adorable leafy districts to enjoy exclusive fashion. The vibes of Aoyama, Ginza, Omotesando and Yurakucho springs to mind quickly. Likewise, in powerful fashion districts like Ikebukuro and Shinjuku you will find a wealth of many different styles. Mixed in within the diverse fashion angles of Ikebukuro and Shinjuku are also exquisite luxury brands which can be found in various trendy parts of these two amazing fashion districts.

Major luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Hermes and a whole host of other luxury brands have heavy exposure in Japan. Indeed, for many luxury brands it is clear that Tokyo and Osaka, and other powerful cities, are a collective saving grace during global economic downturns. After all, the so-called “two lost economic decades” in Japan doesn’t appear to have altered the allure of luxury fashion brands throughout this country.

Therefore, Japan is often the fashion stepping stone prior to entering the Chinese and South Korean market for the majority of famous boutiques. Japan is not only tried and tested but this nation continues to attract new forces within the world of fashion. Also, for many famous international designers who were outside of the Japanese fashion market, then in time this often changes because the lore of Japan is too strong. This fact naturally follows on from the buzzing and vibrant fashion scene throughout Japan and which is expressed openly in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka.

The President of Gucci and CEO of this company, Patrizio di Marco, commented about the Japanese market. He stated that “Japan is one of the biggest and most important luxury markets in the world, with sophisticated and technological consumers. In the last ten years, the most important brands went through times of difficulty, and the situation is still complex. The year 2011 was a time of recovery both in terms of revenues and brand recognition among Japanese clients….We are still investing a lot, both in terms of quality and marketing, there probably is no other market other than Japan in which Gucci’s positioning is more appropriate.”

Patrizio di Marco therefore is highlighting both the complex nature of the luxury fashion market in Japan. Yet at the same time he is making it clear how important Japan is for many famous luxury brands. It is this reality which keeps on pulling in new exquisite designers who enter the vibrant Tokyo and Osaka fashion scene. Of course, each new luxury brand will adopt a different approach to expanding in Japan but a great emphasis is put on expanding in Tokyo and Osaka – and in time – to expand in other major cities like Kobe, Nagoya and so forth.

It is also factual that the vast majority of international luxury brands base themselves in Japan first before expanding to China and South Korea. Therefore, despite the negative global economy it is abundantly clear that for fashion lovers it is “business like usual.”

Japan Fashion News: Takashimaya Department Store and Strong Growth

Tomoko Hara and Michel Lebon

Modern Tokyo Times

It is reported that consolidated operating profit for Takashimaya Department Store in 2012 reached a highly respectable 20%. On top of this, recent figures state that in March 2013 their internal sales were 5% up on the previous year during the same period. This clearly bodes well for this major department store in Japan.

In a previous article by Modern Tokyo Times about Takashimaya Department Store it was reported that a bullish 17% profit margin occurred between April and November 2012. However, now it would appear that Takashimaya is turning the corner.

Takashimaya can be found throughout Japan and they also have some international stores. In Tokyo the vibrant store in Shinjuku is a must place to visit for people who adore quality fashion goods and products. This applies equally to the crème de la crème of famous Japanese and international brands.

In Singapore famous companies like Anya Hindmarch, Armani Collezoni, Agnes.b, Bally, Bottega Veneta, Bric’s, Burberry, Bvlgari, Cartier, Coach, Davidoff, Diane von Fursterberg, DKNY, Emenegildo Zegna, Escada Sport, Furla, Gucci, Hermes, Kenzo, Kate Spade, Max & CO., M.C.L Jewelry, Pucci, Ralph Lauren, Salvatore Ferragamo, Scarlet & Ebony, TOD’S, and other amazing brands, can be found in the adorable Takashimaya Department Store. Not surprisingly, the above reality highlights the delightful nature of this company because in all Takashimaya stores you will find luxury throughout.

It is known that this company wants to expand over the next few years in various parts of Asia. Therefore, with earnings increasing then this fits in well with the future plans of Takashimaya.

According to Timothy Schepis (http://www.tokyofashiondaily.com/) at Tokyo Fashion Daily, “Sales at Takashimaya are being driven by import brands, luxury timepieces and Takashimaya private brand apparel and accessories.”

Timothy Schepis also states that “If a struggling department store like Takashimaya posts strong profit and sales numbers is this a positive sign for Japan’s economy in whole?”

It could well be that Takashimaya is highlighting the current nature of the Japanese economy which is showing some signs of life. Yet, credit must also be given to the management of this company because recent internal changes have impacted on the current upturn in sales. However, given the nature of fashion and retail alongside the competitive nature of this market in Japan; then clearly nothing can be taken for granted. Therefore, it is hoped that Takashimaya can further consolidate within Japan and internationally in parts of Asia which are being targeted for future expansion.

Tokyo Fashion News: Female Choices in Ginza and Yurakucho

Sarah Deschamps and Kanako Itamae

Modern Tokyo Times

The fashion scene in Ginza is known for being based on crème de la crème boutiques whereby style, panache, extreme quality, latest vibes, and so forth, goes hand in hand. Other districts in Tokyo like Aoyama and Omotesando are equally known for having the most famous fashion companies in the world. Therefore, these districts are awash with exquisite fashion and the architecture matches the image of the boutiques. Also, you have amazing department stores which provide an abundance of stunning boutiques and the rise of the Yurakucho fashion district is enhancing Ginza.

This survey carried out by Modern Tokyo Times is one of many and with each new survey a sample of the fashion vibes of Tokyo becomes stronger. After all, the mosaic of fashion is being put together like a jigsaw and while weaknesses will occur in all surveys, it is apparent that some boutiques and department stores appear to have strengths in depth irrespective of the main fashion district.

In recent times exquisite companies like Akris, Bally, and Freitag, from Switzerland have entered the Ginza scene and this highlights the exclusive nature of this sophisticated fashion district. Also, Yurakucho which shares the same environment keeps on growing and this district is enhancing the Ginza fashion scene and obviously the same applies in the other direction. After all, in recent times Lumine which is a stunning department store opened up for business in Yurakucho in late 2011 and the same applies to Hankyu Men’s. Therefore, it is clear that department stores in Ginza which include Printemps Ginza, Matsuya Ginza, and Mitsukoshi Ginza, are watching developments with interest because both fashion districts are creating a fresh buzz.

Therefore, by doing surveys in various fashion districts in Tokyo it is hoped to shape an image of the real vibes of this amazing city. The survey in this article applies to 150 females aged between 18 and 28 and like usual the individuals involved all adore fashion. Also, like all the other surveys the emphasis is on female fashion trends and while some boutiques may be “in the eye of the media” often “on the ground” the picture is very different.

In a past survey about department stores based on the findings of Harajuku and Omotesando it was obvious that Laforet Harajuku had a distinctive advantage and it was great to see Parco being selected by many females. It was commented that “Lumine was still selected highly and this bodes well for this elegant department store and it was good to see Parco doing well in this survey. After all, it shows that different fashion districts will have certain bias towards individual companies and department stores. After all, everybody that took part in this survey loves the fashion districts of Harajuku and Omotesando. Given this reality then Laforet Harajuku held a distinctive advantage but it was noticeable that nobody highlighted Shibuya 109. This may hint at the rivalry between Harajuku and Shibuya?”

Therefore, the strength of Lumine for young ladies appears to hold up well even in parts of Tokyo where you have no Lumine stores. However, recently Lumine opened up a stunning department store in Yurakucho and clearly this company is highly popular because Lumine came out on top in this survey.

Lumine was selected first in this survey and for the first time Printemps Ginza, Estnation, and Barneys New York were highlighted well because all three shared similar votes to Marui and Shibuya 109. Obviously, Printemps Ginza gained because of its firm base in Ginza and this elegant and stylish department store clearly understands that the market is changing with the recent arrival of Lumine in Yurakucho. However, the standing of Shibuya 109 highlights the fact that younger ladies are viewing these changes positively and Marui is based throughout Tokyo and is highly liked. Also, the strong showing of Estnation and Barneys New York highlights the exquisite nature of fashion in Ginza and Yurakucho.

Matsuya Ginza and Mitsukoshi Ginza also can’t be overlooked in the survey because it was noticeable in this survey that the crème de la crème of boutiques also had their best showing collectively. Therefore, some of the brands selected are only based in the above two department stores in Ginza and Yurakucho. This must be taken into consideration and the same applies to both department stores focusing heavily on the 30s and over age group, while still catering for younger ladies who adore high-end fashion.

In the first tier of fashion companies selected were Emoda, H & M, Free’s Shop, Zara, Moussy, Chloe, United Arrows, and Forever 21. Just below and within a short distance of the top tier group were Miu Miu and Snidel. However, due to the complex nature of the findings in this survey then they belong to a special “first tier B group” because the gap between these two companies was just a smidgeon below Chloe, United Arrows, Forever 21, and Moussy. Zara and H & M came out joint top followed by Free’s Shop and Emoda.

Companies selected in the second tier apply to Chanel, Laguna Moon, Mercuryduo, Tomorrowland, Marc Jacobs, American Apparel, Topshop, Ships, and Rienda. The following third tier which was just below includes Adam et Rope, Louis Vuitton, Croon A Song, Aquagirl, Murua, Theory, Nano Universe, Another Edition, Liz Lisa, Sly, Opening Ceremony, Beams, Lowrys’ Farm, and Spick and Span.

Countless other companies were mentioned in the next tier but the most intriguing aspect of the fashion scene in Ginza and Yurakucho was the department store angle. This applies to the diversity of companies selected and this highlights the unique and exclusive nature of fashion in Ginza and Yurakucho.

Michel Lebon and Hiroshi Saito

Modern Tokyo Times

Tokyo fashion is extremely diverse because you have so many places to visit throughout this ultramodern city. Irrespective if you are a Tokyoite or visitor to Tokyo you can’t but help to notice the sophistication of fashion in this amazing city. Therefore, you are literally spoilt for choice but if you like refined areas, a lovely mixture of Japanese and international fashion and a real vibe, then Omotesando and the entire area is one big fashion paradise.

This applies to the continuity of Aoyama, Harajuku, Omotesando and Shibuya. It is simply amazing and you have so many other areas of quality fashion. Therefore, for the fashion conscious Tokyo is a must and international tourists who love fashion will simply adore the many areas of this trendy and vibrant mega-city.

Omotesando Hills is a fantastic place to visit and see the rich variety of Japanese and international fashion. Also, while the initial issue of the opening of this building cast doubts, related to the old area which was loved by locals in Aoyama. It must be stated that many years later then all this seems like a distant memory because Omotesando Hills is certainly on the map.

Modern Tokyo Times took images of aspects of the fashion on show inside the building of Omotesando Hills. This applies to images showing fashion from Adore, Anterpima, Betsey Johnson, Black Fleece, Escada Sport, Tour H. creer (Merveille H.), Yves Saint Laurent, and Zara.

However, you have other lovely fashion companies like Tracy Reese, Kiwa Sylphy, iliann loeb, Milly, Tiara, Apartment Department, Martinique Le Conte, Patrizia Pepe Firenze (Incontro), Oriental News and so many others. In truth, it is unfair to not name all the fashion stores because all are blessed with exquisite fashion, style and are full of panache. Therefore, please check the Omotesando Hills website for the full list of companies because you have so many sophisticated boutiques and other stores in this lovely fashion complex.

This luxurious shopping mall was designed by the highly acclaimed Tadao Ando and the architect he implanted was pure genius. This applies to the lovely layout, the nice imagery and the casual nature of browsing around because everything works like clockwork.

The building itself graces the entire area and inside it looks sophisticated without needing any glitz. Instead, you have a building with natural light and which suits the landscape of this fashion conscious area. Tadao Ando clearly won over many individuals and for newcomers to the area then all they will know is that Omotesando Hills is a landmark building.

Therefore, this is the highest compliment that could be given and today it is a must place to visit for fashion lovers who enjoy style, elegance, lovely fabrics, exquisite clothes and bags with quality and style. To cap all this, the ambience inside Omotesando Hills is extremely relaxing and you have a lovely environment whereby you can relax and drink coffee or eat delicious food.

Also, you don’t have the rush factor or searching around for the odd quality fashion store. Instead, you have quality stores after quality stores and while the emphasis at Omotesando Hills is fashion, you also have other types of stores which compliment the elegance of this shopping mall.

Therefore, you have many beauty services and this works well with the entire theme of Omotesando Hills. If this is you area of interest, or if beauty services will compliment your shopping, then you have quality companies inside this ultra-trendy shopping mall. This applies to Createur Reveal (nail salon), hair make Pas de deux (hair salon), le bois (spa and beauty treatment), M.A.C. (cosmetics) and shu uemura beauty boutique (cosmetics).

Omotesando caters for exquisite ladies fashion, mens fashion, baby and kids apparel, jewelry, accessories, bags, beauty services, shoes, eyewear, watches, fashion goods, lifestyle and to add a real touch you have lovely galleries. Also, you have many places to eat and drink and this applies to quality restaurants.
