Tokyo Tourism by the Sea: Stunning Bridge, Statue of Liberty, Beach Area and Fashion

Michel Lebon and Hiroshi Saito

Modern Tokyo Times

Odaiba in Tokyo really stands out because of the unique architecture, the stunning Rainbow Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, relaxing walkways by the sea, the unusual site of a beach, colorful boats which light up the area at night and you also have a host of tourist attractions to enjoy. Indeed, if you visit by monorail then images of the film Blade Runner will spring to mind. Therefore, this part of Tokyo is extremely unique and provides another fascinating angle to this ultra-modern city.

Another noticeable feature of Odaiba is the romantic angle and this especially applies to the night time period. This notably applies to the amazing backdrop of Rainbow Bridge, ample dining areas to enjoy and the refreshing night time view. Also, you have nice walkways along the beach and much further afield. Given all these features, then you really do have a powerful romantic area for couples at night.

Despite the romantic feature of Odaiba at night this does not mean that individuals, friends, groups, relatives and single tourists can’t enjoy the amazing atmosphere. On the contrary, Odaiba is a charming place to relax and unwind irrespective of the situation. After all, the graceful Rainbow Bridge at night is a true wonder to behold and well worth a visit alone without the countless other attractions.

Until major regeneration began Odaiba was a backwater and the tourist angle would have been difficult to imagine. However, with so many ideas coming together to create a vibrant new part of Tokyo, then by the middle of the 1990s everything began to change. Yet despite the growing power of Odaiba and its attractiveness to internal and external tourists, you still have many new projects in the pipeline and this is the beauty of this part of Tokyo because nothing remains static.

The fashion angle to Odaiba also continues to develop. Therefore, you have ample boutiques and stores to visit in several parts of this ultra-modern part of Tokyo. Alongside this you have many entertainment choices and a wide array of restaurants to enjoy scrumptious food. The modern architecture is another amazing feature and ongoing developments continue to boost the area.

Odaiba is a very intriguing man-made island which made the most of Tokyo Bay and the state of the art technology which blesses Japan. Major landfills have altered the landscape but development was patchy at one point. Also, the “bubble economy” several decades ago impacted greatly until changes gradually altered the scene in the middle 1990s, like previously mentioned. The elevated train line, new shopping malls and several astounding hotels backed this renaissance which is continuing in 2013.

Decks Tokyo Beach and Aquacity Odaiba provides a stylish fashion angle to this lovely part of Tokyo. Boutiques on show cater for international fashion lovers and stylish Japanese brands. Within both shopping complexes you also have many other features. For example, in Aquacity Odaiba you have a very large cinema complex to enjoy the latest films on show in trendy Tokyo. Outside of the same complex you have relaxing wooden decks to stroll about and at night the view of Rainbow Bridge is simply amazing.

Venus Fort also caters for fashion and the architecture is designed like a town in South Europe several centuries ago. Within the shopping complex you have many boutiques and restaurants. Therefore, when this is fused with the architecture, then Venus Fort is a truly relaxing place to visit and shop around for new clothes.

Tourists are literally spoilt for choice because you many unique attractions to enjoy your stay. This notably applies to Telecom Center Area; Odaiba Seaside Park; Daikanransha Ferris Wheel; Museum of Maritime Science; National Museum of Emerging Science; Ariake Colosseum; Palette Town; Leisureland; Toyota Mega Web; Oedo Onsen Monogatari; Panasonic Center; Zepp Tokyo; and Tokyo Big Sight is a huge exhibition and convention center which is blessed with bold architecture.

The Fuji TV Building is certainly iconic and is a well-known landmark which really boosted Odaiba during the growing period. Even today this iconic building continues to bless this amazing part of Tokyo. Also, Fuji TV is one of the largest private television stations which is based in Japan and clearly many people visit this amazing building which is graced by stunning architecture.

Of course the most iconic aspect of Odaiba is the amazing view of Rainbow Bridge which is the jewel in the crown of this fantastic district. During the day this bridge clearly stands out but the romantic equation applies to the night time. It is difficult to envisage Odaiba without Rainbow Bridge, Fuji TV Building and the elevated railway system.

Odaiba is clearly a major tourist attraction because of the unique angle to this part of Tokyo. Therefore, irrespective if you are a tourist or a Tokyoite, it is abundantly clear that Odaiba is a place to enjoy and relax.

Japanese Art, Culture and Fashion during the Lifetime of Ogata Gekko (1859-1920)

Lee Jay Walker

Modern Tokyo Times

Ogata Gekko was a very individualistic artist who had a rich style which was based on his upbringing. This applies to mainly being self-taught but this can be over-played because his free spirit was from within. Also, times were changing very quickly during his lifetime therefore Ogata Gekko needed to transform himself in order to meet the changing nature of Japanese society and culture. This article however is mainly focused on the images of Japanese women by Ogata Gekko during a rapidly changing Japan. After all, Ogata Gekko witnessed the changing nature of Japan because he was born in 1859 and died in 1920. Therefore, this amazing Japanese artist was only a small child during the final years of the Edo period and this reality means that he belongs to the dynamic period of Meiji (1868 to 1912) and the early liberal years of the Taisho era which began in 1912.

Without a shadow of a doubt Ogata Gekko and other artists were influenced by the inward changes taking place throughout Japan irrespective if they supported modernity or were traditionalists. Alongside this was new technology which also impacted greatly on the world of ukiyo-e. Therefore, elements of rigidity during the Edo period would soon be on the wane during his childhood. However, while this led to freedom for many, it also led to chaos for other Japanese nationals because of internal convulsions. These internal issues also led to conflicts throughout Northeast Asia and it must be remembered that geography is complex when describing this region.

After all, while Japan is deemed to be firmly in Asia it must be remembered that Japan’s closest neighbor is the Russian Federation which is often seen outside of Asia and belonging to a “European home.” In many ways, Japan’s political elite and dress sense in the Meiji and Taisho periods resemble a Western imperial power. Given this reality, the “sleeping Japan” of the Edo period was now an expanding power and China – which had been the backbone of Japanese cultural influence – was now seen negatively and open to exploitation. Therefore, China now viewed Japan to be hostile because this nation was one of many imperial powers which had designs on China’s wealth. The other nations being European powers and while America may not belong to the traditional imperial club, it is true to say that America also desired a foothold in China.

Artists were also caught between tradition and modernization alongside rapidly changing cultural influences from Europe. The interaction was not one way because Japanese artists also influenced European artists. However, for artists like Ogata Gekko they were bound to be influenced by all this confusion and mayhem.

Natsume Kinnosuke, who lived between 1867 and 1916, sums up the cultural reality of Japan during this period of Japanese history. This applies to the fact that this important Japanese novelist was a composer of haiku, Chinese-style poetry and a deep scholar of British literature.

Kobayashi Kiyochika who was born in 1847 was firmly within the traditional ukiyo-e orbit but this individual who died in 1915 changed alongside the changing nature of Japan. He, like Ogata Gekko, understood the need to adapt while still preserving the best of Japanese traditions.

Richard Lane stated in Images from the Floating World, The Japanese Print, on page 193, that Kobayashi Kiyochika was “…the last important ukiyo-e master and the first noteworthy print artist of modern Japan… [or, perhaps] an anachronistic survival from an earlier age, a minor hero whose best efforts to adapt ukiyo-e to the new world of Meiji Japan were not quite enough.”

Ogata Gekko was part of this changing world and he would express this reality through his art. Therefore, Ogata Gekko provides a glimpse into the cultural changes that were taking place in Japan during his lifetime.

In his images of Japanese women related to this article it is clear that you get a sense of ambition, identity and continuity alongside cultural changes. The images show Japanese women looking elegant, refined and clearly the embroidery and color schemes show a stunning richness. Of course these images will mean different things to each individual and my own interpretation is that it shows a confident Japan and women coming out from the shadows.

The onrushing of change is clearly happening but at the same time the exquisite nature of the past is being preserved. Ogata Gekko is therefore expressing the richness of design, fashion and embroidery during this period in Japan. Also, the females in his images show confidence and a real zest for life within a natural simplicity despite all the social upheavals caused by modernization. Therefore, the real power in these images, I believe, applies to simplicity and how space, time, cultural richness and modern Japanese women were being portrayed. Indeed, the ideal image in a sense can still be seen in modern Japan when ladies dress in traditional styles. This can be seen clearly because a lot of thought, high quality materials, color schemes and other important areas are connecting with the images which Ogata Gekko is showing.

Of course the cultural context is very different alongside the huge time difference. Also, despite these images not focusing on the political and working reality of Japan during the Meiji and Taisho period; they do highlight a culture which is confident, stylish but within the traditions of Japan. This reality means that you can sense a political angle if you look hard enough despite this being distant and hidden by the natural feel of the images produced by Ogata Gekko.

If you think about Coming of Age Day for Japanese ladies in modern Japan then all the symbolic images of tradition can be seen by stunning clothes which show the richness of Japanese tradition. Therefore, just like the images by Ogata Gekko, you can see an ideal beauty within the Japanese psyche and while this form of dress is preserved for special occasions in modern Japan, you can still feel the connection of the past and how tradition is important.

Ogata Gekko expresses this elegantly and with a passion.

Modern Tokyo Times

Takashimaya Co. is one of the major department stores in Japan and despite the challenging international economy they have plans to expand within Asia over the next few years. Currently the internal economy of Japan appears to be picking up based on the policies of the Bank of Japan in early 2013. Despite this, many areas of the international economy remains sluggish but irrespective of this Takashimaya plans to expand. Positive early results related to sales in the first few months of 2013 in Japan also point to a nice springboard for future international expansion.

This company was founded in 1829 and since this time many changes have impacted on Takashimaya. Like any major company within such a competitive sector then many major highs and lows have happened. At the same time periods of low growth and stagnation have also been a reality. This often coincided with the internal mechanisms of the Japanese economy. However, despite everything fresh ideas and more international knowledge meant that new openings have maintained this company through thick and thin.

It is difficult to imagine the luxury fashion floors within this elegant department store and then equate this with being founded during the Edo period. Yet this is the richness of this exquisite department store which originates from Kyoto.

In the modern world of high octane fashion and enormous competition the Takashimaya department store can be found throughout Japan. International wise they have stores in France, Singapore and Taiwan. The American adventure wasn’t successful. However, like all pitfalls any good company worth its salt will reinvigorate itself and this is what Takashimaya appears to be able to do. After all, the longevity of this company speaks for itself.

Takashimaya’s China venture whereby around three to four department stores were planned between the middle of 2012 until 2016 did raise some alarm bells last year because of negative events between China and Japan. This applies to the ongoing tensions between China and Japan, attacks against Japanese companies during heightened nationalist sentiments last year, the slowing economy in China towards the end of 2012 and fears that the market is already saturated. Therefore, it will be interesting to see if Takashimaya changes some of their long-term ambitions in relation to this but in early 2013 the situation appears more stable than in the middle of 2012. Of course, Takashimaya will continue to monitor this issue which is outside their remit because of the political dimension between China and Japan.

According to internal analysts within Takashimaya they forecast an internal shortfall which will be matched by projected growth in their international stores and within its group business. The President of Takashimaya, Koji Suzuki, informed The Asahi Shimbum in 2012 that “We plan to invest to renovate department stores in Japan, but we will not be able to keep (domestic department store) sales from falling…We will maintain sales with our overseas and group businesses.”

In Tokyo Fashion Daily the highly respected Timothy Schepis reports that “For the six month period from May to August 2012, Takashimaya will report a 16% increase in consolidated operating profit of 10.5 billion yen…The increase in consolidated operating profits comes amid sluggish sales at Japan’s department stores – still Takashimaya’s operating revenue also increased 2% to finish at 420 billion yen for the same six month period.”

However, in early 2013 Takashimaya appears to be doing much better than thought possible by the president of this company in the middle of 2012. Modern Tokyo Times states in another article about Takashimaya that “…it was reported that a bullish 17% profit margin occurred between April and November 2012. Now it is apparent that consolidated operating profit for the entire year was 20% and with recent figures indicating further growth in March 2013, then it is hoped that this economic growth is pointing in the right direction for the entire sector in Japan. After all, in recent times the sale figures were often sluggish at Takashimaya because of the overall economy being negative, internal issues, unable to keep costs down, this sector being extremely competitive and other important factors. However, now it would appear that Takashimaya is turning the corner.”

Takashimaya department stores are famous because of the exquisite brands which can be found in all their respective stores. Therefore, this company is hoping to expand within China, south-east Asia and Vietnam. If you adore luxury fashion, a whole array of quality products, scrumptious food and so much more, then clearly Takashimaya will cater for you.

Modern Tokyo Times

Tokyo lifestyle is extremely rich and choosing an ideal location to reside depends greatly on the demands of the individual. However, if you like the hustle and bustle of a very powerful area in Tokyo then Ikebukuro is a great choice. Also, the great thing about Ikebukuro is that the price mechanism varies accordingly and in the backstreets you will also find a more tranquil way of life.

The fashion angle of Ikebukuro is extremely powerful and this applies to department stores which include Lumine, Esola, Tobu Department Store, Seibu Department Store, Marui, Parco and several others. This means that Ikebukuro feels extremely young and vibrant in the main shopping areas of East and West Ikebukuro. The central theme is the huge train station which links so many department stores and aspects of culture in Ikebukuro.

Ikebukuro is blessed with several universities and you also have other institutions which are nearby. This once more means that this vibrant part of Tokyo is blessed with enormous pulling power when it comes to commerce, fashion, education and other important areas of modern life. The same applies to Ikebukuro being the “gateway” which links Saitama with this powerful commercial area and this fact can’t be overlooked. Therefore, many individuals who reside in Saitama will pick Ikebukuro being their first major shopping destination in Tokyo. Similarly, many Tokyoites will also pick Ikebukuro because of the fashion angle and the vibrancy of the nightlife but clearly the Saitama factor is enormous.

West Ikebukuro provides a different angle because it is more cosmopolitan and the abundance of fashion is amazing. This applies to utilizing the adorable Tobu Department Store which caters for amazing fashion brands, crafts, delicious food, and so much more. Also, for expats you have a fine selection of international cheese, wine, beer, and other products to make you feel like “home from home.”

Tobu Department Store also connects with Lumine Department Store in several places and both entities enrich each other. After all, both department stores have unique features and for young ladies who adore fashion then Lumine is one of the most popular department stores in Tokyo. Of course Tobu Department Store provides adorable boutiques for people of both sexes and different age groups. However, the price mechanism and nature of boutiques are different with Tobu Department Store having many exclusive boutiques and being more conservative. Meanwhile the trendy buzz and vibe of Lumine appeals greatly to younger ladies (also caters for male fashion) because this company understands the latest trends. Therefore, Lumine selects powerful shops-in-shop companies to be based in their department stores in order to meet the demands of the younger generation.

Esola is another lovely department store for ladies and Marui is also based in West Ikebukuro. Marui like Lumine is also in high demand for fashion lovers throughout Tokyo because both stores are extremely trendy. Meanwhile Esola provides a lovely elegant feel because despite have many exquisite boutiques, it isn’t too sizeable and this provides a lovely shopping experience. Also, within each department store they cater for other products and you have so many places to eat in the same buildings. This is an added bonus because people can unwind with friends and so forth by relaxing in stylish restaurants where the food is scrumptious.

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space will re-open this autumn in 2012 and once the new design is on view then people will be able to relax in a stylish arena which caters to the cultural angle of Ikebukuro. Japan Traditional Craft Center in Ikebukuro is also a must place to visit for adorable Japanese crafts. This building is connected to Tobu Department Store and opposite Lumine. The Japan Traditional Craft Center provides a wealth of amazing products and this lovely shopping experience is richly rewarding.

In East Ikebukuro you have Parco Department Store and Seibu Department Store along with a host of other fashion companies in the streets of this side of Ikebukuro. Parco is another vibrant fashion zone for the younger generation meanwhile Seibu Department Store caters for a wealth of diverse products. Also, Seibu Department Store is blessed with stunning boutiques and clearly it is a great place to shop.

Also, on this side of Ikebukuro is Sunshine City which caters for shopping, entertainment, an aquarium, museums, observation deck, and hotel facilities. Sunshine City is an enormous attraction and the streets nearby provide a vibrant atmosphere. This applies to anime stores, entertainment, restaurants, nightlife, independent boutiques, and so much more.

Overall, the lifestyle of Ikebukuro is richly rewarding because this part of Tokyo provides so many options to enjoy. Not only this, the housing areas are relatively quiet and relaxing despite being very close to the buzzing central area. Ikebukuro is also very close to Shinjuku, Ueno, Shibuya, Harajuku, and other major parts of Tokyo. The price mechanism of the housing also means that this part of Tokyo is more affordable than most but of course you can also find places which are extremely expensive therefore much depends on your purchasing power. Yet when it comes to being a desirable place to reside in Tokyo then Ikebukuro provides a wealth of options.

The different vibes of Tokyo fashion are always in heavy demand both internally and internationally therefore the Style Arena website is a must place to check continuously for latest images and news. Images on Style Arena highlight the “real Tokyo” and the interactive knowledge of the respective individuals being highlighted provides powerful information. This applies to the current trends and favorite boutiques of each respective individual. Therefore, Style Arena provides a stylish fresh approach with complete professionalism at all times.

Style Arena http://www.style-arena.jp is currently highlighting Japanese Punk vibes in the New Tribe sector. Once more, each image highlights the stunning and changing fashion vibes of a craze which is reaching the streets of Tokyo from an independent angle. This complements the mainstream reality of much of Style Arena which focuses on powerful fashion districts within buzzing Tokyo.

The five main fashion districts whereby photos are uploaded frequently apply to Daikanyama, Ginza, Harajuku, Omotesando and Shibuya. These five delightful districts provide a lovely ambience to Style Arena based on the distinctiveness of each fashion zone.

After all, the buzzing independence of Harajuku is internationally famous therefore vast numbers of fashion lovers all over the world are fascinated by the unique vibes emanating from this fashion district. Meanwhile, Shibuya is also recognized for being a vibrant youth district for fashion lovers and whereby “Shibuya girls” are known by their own special styles and delightful haircuts. Of course, in Harajuku and Shibuya you also have exquisite mainstream fashion and a plethora of boutiques catering for different styles.

Daikanyama is very different because this fashion district is quaint and off the beaten track for international fashion lovers who visit Tokyo for the first time. However, within Tokyo this lovely district is known for independent fashion styles, elegance and having a warm atmosphere. Also, the lifestyle of Daikanyama is highly desirable therefore this place is in high demand when it comes to a place to call home. Therefore, by providing images of individuals who adore the Daikanyama fashion scene, it is interesting to note the differences in favorite boutiques and trends among some of the people interviewed,

Ginza and Omotesando are two districts which are known for the crème de la crème of Japanese and international fashion. This reality means that you will find many adorable European and American boutiques which mix freely with exquisite Japanese boutiques. These two fashion districts are extremely wealthy and the architecture is also another lovely feature of Ginza and Omotesando.

Tokyoites are fully aware that Harajuku, Omotesando and Shibuya naturally flow together alongside Aoyama which is another amazing fashion district. In the backstreets of Omotesando and Harajuku you will also find independent styles and the vibes of American street fashion can be felt heavily in the backstreets of Omotesando. Therefore, you have a lovely synergy to the entire area which links these fantastic fashion zones into one enormous fashion hub.

Daikanyama is not so far away from Shibuya by train therefore Ginza is the one fashion district which is highlighted by Style Arena which stands out by its location. Like already stated, Ginza and Omotesando share many similar themes when it comes to high fashion. However, with the interplay between Omotesando and Harajuku being so strong and the same applies to Shibuya in terms of distance; then the focus on Ginza does provide another lovely angle to Style Arena.

In another article by Modern Tokyo Times about Style Arena it was stated that “Style Arena is extremely easy on the eye and clearly all the appropriate information is provided. This applies to respective individuals who highlight their favorite fashion companies and other important areas. The photo images also highlight many different angles and clearly great care is being taken. However, it is the easy available information which provides the “in boutiques” which is a huge winner.”

Overall, Style Arena is a must place to visit for fashion lovers who adore the rich angle of this sector in Tokyo. At all times this website is updated with lovely images and latest news whereby other fashion districts are highlighted. The user friendly nature of Style Arena and the language angle which reaches out internationally sums up the entire professionalism of this exquisite website.

Japan fashion News and Benetton: Will Smaller Stores Impact on Profits in 2013?

Kanako Itamae and Michel Lebon

Modern Tokyo Times

Benetton entered the Japanese market over 30 years ago therefore this company is firmly established throughout Japan. It is clear that Benetton believed in the viability of the land of the rising sun before the vast majority of other fashion companies which entered at a later date. However, the enormous competition throughout this sector means that reinvigoration is needed at all times because fashion trends are never static. Likewise, new boutiques, vibes and the growing power of social media keeps on changing this sector.

Last year Benetton decided on changing part of its strategy in Japan in order to increase sales and profit margins. This new policy was focused on opening new smaller stores in order to maintain the visibility of Benetton and to attract new customers which are passing through major train stations. Given the power of major train stations in relation to the fashion scene in Japan then clearly having smaller stores in and around significant train stations does makes complete sense.

Alessandro Benetton, President of the highly acclaimed Benetton Group, stated in 2012 that “I would call them kiosks more than stores.” However, within the powerful fashion scene of major cities throughout Japan then clearly these “small stores” have remarkable appeal with other major fashion outlets. This reality means that Benetton is changing with the times and meeting the natural conditions of Japan.

If individuals don’t fully understand the Japanese market then it is easy to not know the dynamics of fashion within major train stations or connected directly. For example, in Ikebukuro and Shinjuku in Tokyo these train stations are awash with fashion. This applies to inside the train station or being connected with these stations which serve millions of people daily. Therefore, you will find many adorable boutiques within these two train stations, which are also connected with major department stores like Lumine and so many others which share the same environment. The same applies to other major cities throughout Japan like Kobe, Nagoya, Osaka, Sendai and a host of other powerful cities.

Of course the Benetton Group is firmly established within Japan and internationally because of the adorable fashion products they produce. Yet the need for visibility, convenience and adapting to the ever changing market in Japan is essential. For this reason the Benetton Group is hoping to re-connect with established customers and new clients who shop freely within or close by major train stations, by appealing through smaller shops.

Benetton stores which are already firmly established throughout major cities in Japan will hopefully gain from the knock-on-effect of greater visibility and attracting new customers. It is reported that the first new small store will open in trendy Shibuya in Tokyo.

Timothy Schepis (http://twitter.com/tokyofashndaily) at Tokyo Fashion Daily comments that “Even with 4 billion yen in sales in 2011 Benetton Japan’s sales are still struggling. To help counter their decreasing sales Benetton will open smaller, more efficient retail doors selling the minimum with the maximum exposure.”

Benetton Japan is being fully supported back in Italy because it is clear that reinvigoration is needed. It is hoped that the new smaller stores will generate a fresh impetus alongside creating greater visibility. Therefore, many people are waiting for the results of this concept later in 2013 when fiscal results are announced. Hopefully, Benetton is on a winner because this company is part and parcel of the fashion scene within Japan.

Tomoko Hara and Sarah Deschamps

Modern Tokyo Times

Ron Herman just increased its clout in Japan further by opening two new stores in two trendy areas in Tokyo and Osaka. The Grand Front Osaka was bound to hit a chord with exquisite companies and clearly Ron Herman didn’t want to pass such a golden opportunity. Therefore, Ron Herman’s first venture into the fashion scene of Osaka is based in this amazing new concept which is located in the heart of this amazing city. Meanwhile, in Tokyo a new Ron Herman store opened in Tokyo Midtown in the Roppongi area.

These two new stores opened in late April 2013 and this brings the number to eight stores in trendy Japan for Ron Herman. This delightful company is run by Sazaby League, Ltd. Therefore, while venturing into the Roppongi fashion scene is interesting by itself, it more significant that this brand is now open to the public in Osaka.

Osaka fashion and style is amazing because you have ample fashion districts in this ultra modern part of Japan. Indeed, if fashion companies are intent on developing throughout Japan then clearly Tokyo and Osaka are the prime cities because of their collective economic power and ample fashion districts. It is hoped that the venture into Grand Front Osaka will be the start of something fresh in this part of Japan.

Zara Home also opened a new store in Grand Front Osaka because of the prestigious nature of this new concept in the heart of this flourishing city. This company is firmly established in Europe, Middle East, North America and South America and they also have a major presence in China and Japan. The international nature of Zara Home is abundantly clear because they have so many stores open throughout the world.

A PR representative of this company stated that “Grand Front is a favorable location with attractive Umeda clientele. One ‘home’ can be completed with ZARA HOME items.” For individuals who have never visited Umeda and the surrounding fashion districts then clearly this area must be put high on your list if you have the opportunity to visit this part of Japan. The buzzing vibes of Shinsaibashi, Namba and Umeda are truly exuberant because of exquisite fashion which runs throughout many fashion districts in vibrant Osaka.

Zara Home also opened a new store in LaLaport Yokohama in order to enhance their growing influence within the Japanese market. Lifestyle lovers will certainly enjoy this new store because of the quality products on sale and the array of imagination which goes into their respective stores.

Tokyo Fashion News: Stylish Aoyama and Daikanyama

Kanako Itamae and Sarah Deschamps

Modern Tokyo Times

Tokyo fashion is internationally famous and the fashion districts of Aoyama and Daikanyama highlight the vibrancy of this amazing city. Daikanyama is a magnet for people aged in their twenties and thirties. Likewise the prime Aoyama market is known to apply to people aged between 25 and early forties. However, the age group is not “set in stone.” Therefore, the Aoyama fashion scene with its rich sophistication will attract individuals who are older than 40 years of age. After all, fashion is not about robotic age groups it is about style, feeling comfortable, enhancing inner confidence, belonging, being individualistic, expressing yourself, and a host of other powerful factors.

In Daikanyama you have many popular shops which attract people to this fashionable part of Tokyo. These shops include Bonjou Recors, Loveless, Actus, Alfredo Bannister, Evisu, Hollywood Ranch Market, Via Bus Stop, Tsumori Chisato, Silas and Maria, United Bamboo, Arigato, APC, Hemisphere, Denime and many others.

The adorable independent feel to Daikanyama and the closeness to Ebisu is a wonderful treat for fashion lovers. Indeed, the “European fashion district” in Daikanyama is blessed with delightful boutiques. Also, the layout of Daikanyama means that you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Equally important is the special vibe of this trendy district which is located in a prime part of Tokyo.

In Aoyama you have the crème de la crème of Japanese and international fashion companies. The architecture of major boutiques and department stores is equally stunning. Therefore, fashion in Aoyama caters for individuals who adore famous brands and exquisite companies which cater for luxury.

Aoyama is blessed with amazing boutiques which would grace any powerful city in the world. The partial list of adorable boutiques in Aoyama applies to Prada, Vivienne Westwood, Comme des Garcons, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, 10 Corso Como, Stella McCartney, Red Valentino, Paul Smith, Helmut Lang, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, L’eclaireur, Issey Miyake, A Bathing Ape, Jil Sander, Yohji Yamamoto, Artisan, Hanae Mori, Mark Jacobs, Tsumori Chisato, Costume National, Carbane de Zucca, Diane Von Furstenberg, Undercover, Frapbois, Design Works, Deuxieme Classe, and many other delightful boutiques like Cynthia Rowley.

Not surprisingly, Aoyama is known for being graceful, elegant, stylish, chic, sophisticated and full of panache. Individuals also have exquisite shopping malls to visit like Boutique W, Dress Camp, Flair Aoyama, and Loveless. This dimension means that people are spoilt for choice. Therefore, if individuals are new to Tokyo and they adore fashion then a visit to Aoyama is a must.

In both districts you have so many scrumptious restaurants to visit, relaxing café bars and a mixture of places to wine and dine. Tokyo fashion is known internationally because of the diverse nature of fashion in this ultra-modern city. A visit to Aoyama and Daikanyama will confirm this and the same applies to visiting the rich mosaic of fashionable districts in this delightful capital city.

Independent Fashion in Tokyo and Osaka: A Style Which Keeps on Refreshing Itself

Michel Lebon and Tomoko Hara

Modern Tokyo Times

Lolita fashion began to sprout up in Japan in the late 1970s to early 1980s and over time you have had many offshoots within the “Lolita fashion style.” The clothing image and aesthetics relate to France and the United Kingdom within the realm of all the positives of the Rococo and Victorian periods. Irrespective if the vibe of today hides the real reality of the Victorian period and Rococo period, the role of fashion is to transcend this and to create an image of cuteness, positivity and pure class.

Since the early period which evolved around a small number of individuals this fashion style continues to develop and grow. Therefore, despite this fashion style being relatively obscure in the initial period and being extremely minor in the field of everyday fashion in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and other cities, this style is increasingly popular worldwide. Also, you have special areas in Tokyo, Osaka, and other major cities in Japan which cater and are influenced by Lolita fashion.

Lolita fashion unlike kawaii culture, the punk period, and various other trends, is relatively constrained within certain boundaries. However, despite this you have various styles within the Lolita fashion style. Also, like all fashion trends, it is clear that the natural beauty of many Lolita outfits is being utilized by other fashion styles when it comes to creativity.

Kansai was the initial bedrock of Lolita fashion in Japan but in time areas and companies would adopt this style in parts of Tokyo. Early boutiques which began this movement many decades ago applies to Milk and Pretty (known as Angelic Pretty in time), Pink House, The Stars Shine Bright, and Metamorphose temps de fille.

In time music groups who liked the Lolita image would help this fashion status and Lolita went from obscure shops and a small client base to major powerful stores today in Japan. Most notable, would be Marui One in Shinjuku where you will find beautiful boutiques selling Lolita fashion, kawaii fashion, and other trends emanating from Japan.

Despite the name Lolita having sexual connotations in Western culture this fashion scene is not about looking sexy. Lolita is about elegance and cuteness and sometimes you may see images of Lolita style fashion with ladies in long boots and so forth, but this is outside of the Lolita image and style. Therefore, Lolita on the whole expresses the beauty of the fashion designs and cuteness of both the design and the individual (some Lolita styles are not based on this) who feels special in elegant clothes.

Just like other fashion trends some people will just love the special feel of wearing sophisticated clothes and looking different. However, for others, they will also like the lifestyle associated with Lolita and this applies to philosophy and living in a world based on beauty and other aspects of this movement.

Of special appeal to both writers of this article is Classic Lolita because unlike Sweet Lolita and other areas of this fashion, Classic Lolita suits a wider age group and connects more strongly with aspects of Victorian fashion. This applies to floral patterns and looking classy rather than being focused on cuteness and bold colors.

In contrast to Classic Lolita you have Sweet Lolita which certainly suits the younger generation because this style is based on more expressive styles and is more “child-like” in the positive sense. Therefore, outfits relating to Sweet Lolita are very popular in the colors pink, white, and powder blue. Also, light make-up and a natural approach suits the style of clothing and often you will see hairstyles with lovely bouncy curls and stylish pony tails.

Kuro Lolita (Black Lolita) is a fascinating style based on the co-ordinates of black and the style of this fashion looks very elegant. Also, if an individual is new to Lolita fashion then Kuro Lolita is a great starter because this style isn’t so complex. Despite this, the Kuro Lolita and the Classic Lolita look are extremely classy and both styles suit the images of the Victorian period.

Most intriguing from a Japanese cultural point of view is Wa Lolita because this fuses the culture where Lolita fashion took off. Therefore, you have a fusion of Lolita with the styles of yukata and kimono outfits and when this style works it really looks exquisite and graceful.

Also, just like the special fabrics used for a lovely kimono you also have flower prints with great detail and other aspects of the kimono and yukata style. Kanzashi hairclip styles based on flowers also works beautifully and creates a lovely Japanese style within the Lolita fashion range.

Overall, Lolita fashion keeps on evolving and for the puritans it isn’t all positive because Ero Lolita and Cosplay Lolita are going in the wrong direction and have little to do with the real fashion image. Other styles of Lolita apply to Gothic, Casual, Country, Shiro, Hime, Punk, Kodona, Aristocrat, Sailor, and several others.

The website http://www.lolitafashion.org/ Lolita Fashion is very good for information about the different styles. Also, the Lolita Fashion website shows many beautiful images and if you prefer other styles of Lolita than mentioned in this article, then please check the images and information from this website.

Lolita is very varied and the elegant nature of the vast majority of these different styles means that many fashion designers will borrow from the creativity of Lolita fashion.

Tokyo Fashion News: New Fashion Vibes in Elegant Ginza

Kanako Itamae and Sarah Deschamps

Modern Tokyo Times

Ginza is located in a very leafy part of Tokyo and the fashion angle to this district is known for endless exquisite boutiques. This reality still exists strongly within the plush environment of Ginza but a more casual approach to fashion is gradually impacting on this adorable district. Therefore, you now have a more eclectic vibe because of the natural flow of different age groups and fashion styles.

Ginza and Yurakucho naturally flow into each other in this exclusive part of Tokyo and changes can also be felt in Yurakucho. In recent times the Lumine Department Store entered the market of Yurakucho. Therefore, with the enormous pulling power of this delightful fashion store appealing to the younger generation then ongoing developments in Ginza naturally altered the fashion landscape. Indeed, the Lumine Department Store is extremely hip because of so many elegant boutiques which can be found in this lovely store.

Internationally, fashion districts like Aoyama, Ginza and Omotesando are all famous because of the exquisite nature of the boutiques and other types of companies which can be found in these stunning districts. Naturally, you will also witness extravagant architecture in all three plush districts. However, with the fashion sector being so competitive then it is essential that respective fashion districts open themselves up to new approaches. In this sense, it is clear that the new trends entering Ginza are based on the need to maintain a fresh angle. Therefore, a more casual outlook which focused on the younger generation gradually emerged despite the crème de la crème angle still dominating.

In another article by Modern Tokyo Times it was stated that “Another natural result of this is the growing youthful dynamics of fashion in Ginza which is creating a complete shopping experience for all age groups. The exclusive nature of fashion remains in Ginza and neighboring Yurakucho. Yet clearly the casual fashion scene is altering the dynamics despite still being secondary overall to the exquisite fashion scene, which still predominates in this part of Tokyo.”

“Therefore, in the past it may have appeared risky for companies like H&M, Uniqlo, Shimamura (Fashion Center Shimamura), and others, to target exclusive fashion districts like Ginza. However, this clearly no longer applies because despite the huge rent costs which exist in this plush fashion district. It is abundantly clear that more casual based fashion companies can not only survive within the fashion environment of Ginza, but they can also grow and develop. Similarly, the internal products being sold are also gaining in quality and style.”

Real Estate in the Chuo-dori and Harumi-dori is where some of the most expensive real estate exists throughout the world. Despite this, many brands aimed at the lower end of the market have not only entered the fashion angle in Ginza but they have also created a new buzz throughout the entire district.

Overall, Ginza is still rightly known for the exclusive nature of many boutiques which are located in this part of Tokyo. However, the vibrancy of the younger generation, fresh approaches to fashion and connecting with the environment, means that a new energy can be felt throughout this adorable fashion district.

Osaka and Tokyo Fashion: Hotbed for Fashion in Mega Train Stations

Sarah Deschamps and Hiroshi Saito

Modern Tokyo Times

In Japan you have a very natural relationship between modern and powerful train stations and the world of fashion. Indeed, many major train stations in Tokyo and Osaka, and throughout Japan, are real eye-openers to the world of fashion in the land of the rising sun. Therefore, for individuals who travel to Japan for the first time, then this reality will really stand out.

This relationship doesn’t only apply to renting retail space. More important, many major train companies own or joint-own major Japanese department stores. For example, Lumine department store was established by JR East in order to utilize the best of both worlds. After all, when you have millions of people passing through the main stations of Tokyo then this makes perfect sense.

Shinjuku and Ikebukuro are major train stations in Tokyo whereby millions of people pass through every day. People either work in these vibrant districts or individuals go shopping in these powerful parts of Tokyo. Likewise, vast numbers of people are passing through or internal and external tourists are visiting these trendy districts for various reasons.

In Ikebukuro you will find the stylish Lumine department store very close to Tobu department store on the west side, while on the east side of the train station complex you will find Seibu department store. All these amazing department stores are connected to the respective train lines which serve this train station. Within all these department stores you will find adorable fashion which applies to Japanese and international boutiques. Also, in Tobu department store and Seibu department store you can by a whole array of different products.

Likewise, in the buzzing city of Osaka you will find amazing shopping malls within major train stations or connected to various train stations within the same complex. For example in Namba, which is one of the most stylish areas in this amazing city, the fashion angle is simply fantastic and extremely trendy. Therefore, it is clear that places like Namba Walk caters for exquisite fashion and for people to enjoy eating at the many restaurants within the same vicinity. This feature is clearly popular because vast numbers of people do their shopping within Namba Walk and other amazing shopping malls which can be found within the same environment.

In Shinjuku in Tokyo major train companies like the Odakyu Group and many others like Lumine, all vie for a slice of the fashion market. The Odakyu train company was originally focused on the train sector but in time this company changed alongside the usage of the name. Now in modern times the Odakyu Group can be found in the train sector, finance, real estate, personal storage, bus service, fiber optic networking and a whole array of other areas related to business. Given the powerful nature of this company, then the Odakyu department store caters for the crème de la crème of fashion boutiques and other stores related to lifestyle.

Therefore, within the Odakyu department store in Shinjuku you will find amazing companies like Cartier, Chanel, Shiseido, Jill Stuart, Rolex, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co, Omega, Seiko, Shu Uemura and so much more. These companies provide places for people to shop for exquisite fashion, amazing watch companies and exquisite cosmetic brands.

Not only this, but the same Odakyu Group owns My Lord in Shinjuku which caters for trendy young fashion lovers. This means that the Odakyu Group is providing two fantastic department stores which are aimed at different age groups and fashion styles. Therefore, this shows the innovation of fashion and the strong connection with the train sector which understands the need to diversify. Similarly, you will find Lumine department stores within the Shinjuku train complex and other companies which mix both sectors.

Also, within walking distance outside you will have an amazing fashion angle within Tokyo and Osaka respectively – and throughout Japan. For example, in trendy Osaka you will find amazing shopping malls within and surrounding Umeda train station. Therefore, the ultra-modern train stations in major cities throughout Japan are connected with the fashion sector and being places to relax.

In the United Kingdom you have major train stations like Euston in London, Manchester Piccadilly, Paddington in London and so forth. However, while you will find some areas to buy fashion the scale is much smaller and not based on major international brands. Also, local people don’t want to relax in these train stations and go shopping, eat scrumptious food and so forth. However, in Tokyo and Osaka it is very different because major train stations are powerful fashion hubs and places whereby you can relax. Indeed, within the train station complex of Ikebukuro and connected with the Lumine and Tobu department stores, you also have a cinema within the same shared environment.

Overall, major train stations are powerful hubs of fashion. Also, in Tokyo it is clear that major train groups have established their own department stores in order to utilize the people who use their respective train companies. Obviously, because major train stations like Shinjuku and Ikebukuro serve several different train companies, then passengers of all these train networks can utilize the fashion angle of several train companies. Likewise, powerful department stores that are solely based within the fashion sector also make the most of the same environment.

Michel Lebon and Tomoko Hara

Modern Tokyo Times

Tokyo and Osaka are amazing mega-cities whereby the fashion and beauty scene is always changing. Osaka is a hidden gem within Japan because this amazing city doesn’t hit the lofty international headlines like Tokyo. However, Osaka and the conurbation area which incorporates Kobe is one enormous zone which can compete favorably with all major international zones of trade and commerce.

The fashion and beauty angle in Osaka is equally amazing and each year you have new amazing developments in the realm of modern architecture. Tokyo is the usual stepping stone for international boutiques to enter the Japanese fashion sector but Osaka is powerful in its own right.

Forever 21 opened its first flagship store in Osaka on April 20 this month in the Dotonbori district. The new venture witnesses the first business dealing between Forever 21 and Parco and this bodes well for future dealings. Internationally, Forever 21 is currently blessed with 500 stores. Therefore, given the power of Osaka within the Kansai region then the new Dotonbori opening may become a future stepping stone for this stylish company within this vibrant part of Japan.

Jacob Cohen which is a stylish jeanswear and upper sportswear company opened today in the trendy Roppongi district. The sales manager, Marco Tiburzi, stated that “We also aim at increasing our presence in new markets such as former Russian countries as well as growing in the Far East. We are interested in expanding, though we want to do it gradually without going against our own identity.” Once more, it would appear that Tokyo is the stepping stone for not only Osaka but also for China because it is known that Jacob Cohen hopes to enter the Chinese market over the next few years. Roppongi is known for its international flavor therefore this district appears to be a natural suit for Jacob Cohen.

In the same fashion district of Roppongi a new Alexander McQueen accessories store opened to the general public earlier this month. The Alexander McQueen brand is famous because of exquisite elegance. Therefore, the new store will sell a variety of adorable goods ranging from bags, leather goods, jewelry, scarves and other lovely products.

Tokyo and Osaka fashion is always forward thinking and this applies to the Japanese and international angle. Also, with Planet Blue also entering the Roppongi fashion scene, then clearly many developments are taking place in this vibrant district alongside the mentioned openings of Alexander McQueen and Jacob Cohen. In the meantime new mega developments in Osaka are ongoing in many sectors and clearly the fashion angle is a lovely way to escape all the stresses of life.
