Independent Fashion in Tokyo and Osaka: A Style Which Keeps on Refreshing Itself

Michel Lebon and Tomoko Hara

Modern Tokyo Times

Lolita fashion began to sprout up in Japan in the late 1970s to early 1980s and over time you have had many offshoots within the “Lolita fashion style.” The clothing image and aesthetics relate to France and the United Kingdom within the realm of all the positives of the Rococo and Victorian periods. Irrespective if the vibe of today hides the real reality of the Victorian period and Rococo period, the role of fashion is to transcend this and to create an image of cuteness, positivity and pure class.

Since the early period which evolved around a small number of individuals this fashion style continues to develop and grow. Therefore, despite this fashion style being relatively obscure in the initial period and being extremely minor in the field of everyday fashion in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and other cities, this style is increasingly popular worldwide. Also, you have special areas in Tokyo, Osaka, and other major cities in Japan which cater and are influenced by Lolita fashion.

Lolita fashion unlike kawaii culture, the punk period, and various other trends, is relatively constrained within certain boundaries. However, despite this you have various styles within the Lolita fashion style. Also, like all fashion trends, it is clear that the natural beauty of many Lolita outfits is being utilized by other fashion styles when it comes to creativity.

Kansai was the initial bedrock of Lolita fashion in Japan but in time areas and companies would adopt this style in parts of Tokyo. Early boutiques which began this movement many decades ago applies to Milk and Pretty (known as Angelic Pretty in time), Pink House, The Stars Shine Bright, and Metamorphose temps de fille.

In time music groups who liked the Lolita image would help this fashion status and Lolita went from obscure shops and a small client base to major powerful stores today in Japan. Most notable, would be Marui One in Shinjuku where you will find beautiful boutiques selling Lolita fashion, kawaii fashion, and other trends emanating from Japan.

Despite the name Lolita having sexual connotations in Western culture this fashion scene is not about looking sexy. Lolita is about elegance and cuteness and sometimes you may see images of Lolita style fashion with ladies in long boots and so forth, but this is outside of the Lolita image and style. Therefore, Lolita on the whole expresses the beauty of the fashion designs and cuteness of both the design and the individual (some Lolita styles are not based on this) who feels special in elegant clothes.

Just like other fashion trends some people will just love the special feel of wearing sophisticated clothes and looking different. However, for others, they will also like the lifestyle associated with Lolita and this applies to philosophy and living in a world based on beauty and other aspects of this movement.

Of special appeal to both writers of this article is Classic Lolita because unlike Sweet Lolita and other areas of this fashion, Classic Lolita suits a wider age group and connects more strongly with aspects of Victorian fashion. This applies to floral patterns and looking classy rather than being focused on cuteness and bold colors.

In contrast to Classic Lolita you have Sweet Lolita which certainly suits the younger generation because this style is based on more expressive styles and is more “child-like” in the positive sense. Therefore, outfits relating to Sweet Lolita are very popular in the colors pink, white, and powder blue. Also, light make-up and a natural approach suits the style of clothing and often you will see hairstyles with lovely bouncy curls and stylish pony tails.

Kuro Lolita (Black Lolita) is a fascinating style based on the co-ordinates of black and the style of this fashion looks very elegant. Also, if an individual is new to Lolita fashion then Kuro Lolita is a great starter because this style isn’t so complex. Despite this, the Kuro Lolita and the Classic Lolita look are extremely classy and both styles suit the images of the Victorian period.

Most intriguing from a Japanese cultural point of view is Wa Lolita because this fuses the culture where Lolita fashion took off. Therefore, you have a fusion of Lolita with the styles of yukata and kimono outfits and when this style works it really looks exquisite and graceful.

Also, just like the special fabrics used for a lovely kimono you also have flower prints with great detail and other aspects of the kimono and yukata style. Kanzashi hairclip styles based on flowers also works beautifully and creates a lovely Japanese style within the Lolita fashion range.

Overall, Lolita fashion keeps on evolving and for the puritans it isn’t all positive because Ero Lolita and Cosplay Lolita are going in the wrong direction and have little to do with the real fashion image. Other styles of Lolita apply to Gothic, Casual, Country, Shiro, Hime, Punk, Kodona, Aristocrat, Sailor, and several others.

The website http://www.lolitafashion.org/ Lolita Fashion is very good for information about the different styles. Also, the Lolita Fashion website shows many beautiful images and if you prefer other styles of Lolita than mentioned in this article, then please check the images and information from this website.

Lolita is very varied and the elegant nature of the vast majority of these different styles means that many fashion designers will borrow from the creativity of Lolita fashion.

Tokyo Fashion News: Diversity, Elegance and Amazing Fashion Districts

Kanako Itamae and Michel Lebon

Modern Tokyo Times

Throughout the world you have amazing cities where fashion is flourishing. Notable cities apply to Milan, Paris, New York, London, Moscow, Seattle, Prague, and a host of other major cities where the finest boutiques in the world can be found. In Japan the fashion scene is also buzzing in cities like Osaka, Kobe, Nagoya, Hiroshima and in other cities like Sendai. These cities have a wealth of amazing Japanese and international boutiques and clearly the fashion scene in Osaka is enormous. This is based on the size of the population and purchasing power of this vibrant city.

However, from an international point of view then Tokyo stands out because of the amazing fashion districts throughout this ultra-modern city. Of course, Osaka can’t be ignored but sadly this city doesn’t appear to be selling itself internationally. Therefore, Osaka can never be underestimated and with Kobe and Kyoto being so near, then Kansai is certainly a flourishing area for fashion. Given this reality, it is hoped that Osaka will obtain more international media coverage when it comes to fashion in the near future because this city is truly dynamic.

Tokyo is rightly viewed positively when it comes to the lifestyle of this amazing city and the fashion angle is a real treasure. This especially applies to the diverse nature of the fashion districts in this fabulous city. It is difficult to mention all the special districts because you have so many. Also, in many parts of Tokyo you have enormous hubs of fashion which link neighboring districts. For example, the fashion districts of Aoyama, Harajuku, Omotesando, and Shibuya, are linked within one amazing hub of fashion which would enhance any major city in the world. Yet the beauty of Tokyo is that you have other powerful districts which are linked together, for example Ginza, Yurakucho, Tokyo central and the district of Nihonbashi.

It is impossible to state which city is the most fashionable in the world because people will always have personal tastes. Also, unless you are a real jet-setter then most individuals will never have the opportunity to visit the top thirty to forty fashion cities in the world. Even then, you will always have special cities which appeal to individuals for different reasons. However, it is fair to say that it is difficult to surpass the Tokyo fashion scene when it comes to the amount of buzzing districts within this mega city. Therefore, while Tokyo may not be the number one fashion city for all individuals who have visited this amazing city – it surely will always rank highly irrespective if deemed number one or among the elite fashion cities in the world.

The charm of Tokyo is the wealth of fashion districts to visit and the unique nature of each area which is blessed with fashion in abundance. These districts include Aoyama, Harajuku, Ginza, Ikebukuro, Yurakucho, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Omotesando, Roppongi Hills, Jiyugaoka, Daikanyama, Ebisu, Ueno, Shimokitazawa, Kichijoji, Nakameguro (Naka Meguro), Koenji, Nakano, and a few other districts. Obviously, the above extensive list highlights the amazing reality of fashion in Tokyo.

Districts like Aoyama, Omotesando, Ginza, Yurakucho, and a few others, highlight sophistication, elegance, and haute couture. Without a shadow of a doubt you will find the crème de la crème of boutiques in these chic and adorable places for fashion. Ikebukuro also shouldn’t be underestimated because this district is blessed with a wealth of fashion which caters for both exquisite fashion to the street angle. Also, the richness of architecture in these amazing districts is a real treasure because it highlights the power of these parts of Tokyo and provides another adorable angle to this vibrant city.

Aoyama is blessed with so many exquisite boutiques that the names just run of the tongue naturally. A partial list applies to Prada, Comme des Garcons, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, 10 Corso Como, Donna Karan, Michael Kors, L’eclaireur, Vivienne Westwood, Issey Miyake, A Bathing Ape, Jil Sander, Yohji Yamamoto, Artisan, Stella McCartney, Red Valentino, Paul Smith, Helmut Lang, Hanae Mori, Mark Jacobs, Tsumori Chisato, Costume National, Carbane de Zucca, Diane Von Furstenberg, Undercover, Frapbois, Design Works, Deuxieme Classe, and many other adorable boutiques like Cynthia Rowley. On top of this, you have lovely malls to visit which include Boutique W, Dress Camp, Flair Aoyama, and Loveless.

Harajuku and Shibuya are internationally famous because of the various fashion subcultures which exist. Also, both districts are extremely diverse and while fashion subcultures are represented within Harajuku and Shibuya along with independent fashion styles, this isn’t the whole picture. After all, mainstream fashion and a mixture of Japanese and international boutiques can be found throughout both amazing fashion zones. Not only this, in the backstreets of Harajuku and not so far from Shibuya, you also have a vibrant casual scene where the influence of America can be felt. This casual area also caters for boutiques which are extremely independent and creative.

In Harajuku the fashion scene is blessed by Sebastian Masuda and the brand called 6%DOKIDOKI. This applies to the “chaotic punk” theme and the richness of kawaii culture which is represented by this amazing company. It is companies like 6%DOKIDOKI which manage to breakdown cultural boundaries and help to bridge youth culture. After all, Harajuku is one of the most famous fashion districts in the world. Therefore, because of individuals like Sebastian Masuda the Harajuku fashion angle remains unique and vibrant – and this in turn highlights the creativity of Japanese fashion.

In an earlier article by Modern Tokyo Times it was stated that “Kawaii culture in Tokyo goes back several decades but this unique style which belongs to Japan continues to develop and modify. 6%DOKIDOKI is part and parcel of kawaii culture and the ongoing vibrancy of this unique style. However, Sebastian Masuda does not pertain to any single style because he is a creator and styles created by 6%DOKIDOKI then hit the fashion scene internationally. Therefore, Sebastian Masuda is not a follower of fashion but he is a rare creator of fashion and styles.”

During several surveys by Modern Tokyo Times which were aimed at young ladies throughout Tokyo, then many boutiques were selected favorably. This partial list applies to Zara, Topshop, Emoda, Snidel, Sly, H & M, Mercury Duo, Egoist, American Apparel, Forever 21, Moussy, Jouetie, and Laguna Moon, Chanel, Tsumori Chisato, Marua, Rose Bud, Risel, Chloe, Dazzlin, Otoe, Comme des Garcons, Gucci, Lowry’s Farm, Miu Miu, G.V.G.V., Spick and Span, Unsqueaky, Earth Music & Ecology, Beams, SmackyGlam (Smacky Glam), Jill Stuart, Free’s Shop, Chelsea, Liz Lisa, Lip Service, Osmosis, Grimoire, Heather, Louis Vuitton, Jeanasis, Tracy Reese, Journal Standard, Adam et Rope, Kaka Vaka, Opening Ceremony, Celine, Loungedress, D’issy, Urban Research, Frayi D, Rosso, Martin Margiela, Barak, Qosmos, Theory, Theatre Products, Alexander Wang, Ann Demeulemeester, Ingni, Another Edition, Miel Crishunant, and many others.

Meanwhile department stores including Lumine, Shibuya 109, Marui, Isetan, Laforet Harajuku, Parco, and others, were picked time and again and you also had location favorites. For example, in Ikebukuro the department stores comprising of Esola, Seibu Department Store and Tobu Department Store appeal to various different age groups. At the same time, the pull of Lumine, Marui, and Parco, means that the Ikebukuro fashion scene continues to grow from strength to strength. This notably applies to the younger generation which flock to Esola, Lumine, Marui and Parco respectively in Ikebukuro. Likewise, the variables alter in Harajuku and Omotesando because Laforet Harajuku, Omotesando Hills and the new Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku (Omohara) are highly valued by fashion lovers.

Indeed, the department store angle is another amazing feature of fashion in Tokyo. The most famous three stores internationally apply to Shibuya 109, Marui One, and Laforet Harajuku; however, new stores like Omohara will continue to alter the fashion landscape. The unique vibes of each area is really special and for individuals who adore Shinjuku you have a wealth of amazing department stores to visit. This applies to Isetan, Keio, Lumine, Marui, Mitsukoshi ALCOTT, Odakyu, Takashimaya and Mylord. Also, Marui and Lumine have several stores in Shinjuku and Lumine 2 is extremely fashionable. Likewise, the fashion angle at Marui One is a real treasure and is a must place to visit for fashion lovers. After all, a visit to Mauri One is really special because so many fashion trends are catered for including modern kimono, princess fashion, casual styles, fantasy fashion, Visual kei, Lolita, Gothic, and dreamy fashion.

Therefore, Tokyo fashion caters for a wealth of many different angles and companies like 6%DOKIDOKI and Grimoire highlight the individualism of this buzzing city. Grimoire is famous for Dolly-kei and other styles which are so individualistic. The elegant looking Hitomi Nomura manages Grimoire. Individuals like herself and Sebastian Masuda at 6%DOKIDOKI, show that Tokyo is blessed with a free and stylish spirit which can’t be crushed by convention.

Overall, it is abundantly clear that the Tokyo fashion scene is blessed with many amazing and diverse fashion districts. Therefore, Tokyo is one of the most fashionable cities in the world and with up and coming designers in Koenji waiting to fill the need of new trends, then the future looks bright for this buzzing and stylish mega city.

Tokyo fashion and tourism in Harajuku and Omotesando: Meiji Jingu to fashion

Sarah Deschamps and Lee Jay Walker

Modern Tokyo Times

In 2012 the Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku (Omohara) opened for business and this vibrant new shopping complex which caters for fashion highlights the dynamics of Harajuku and Omotesando. This applies to new fashion styles, major changes related to architecture, fresh thinking, and other powerful dynamics. Therefore, Omohara, just like Omotesando Hills, is continuing with this fresh approach but the beauty of the entire area is that Harajuku and Omotesando remain to be distinctive.

Fashion tourism is increasingly growing in Tokyo and this applies to both individuals who reside in other parts of Japan and to international tourists. Powerful fashion areas like Aoyama, Harajuku, Ginza, Shibuya, and Shinjuku, are internationally famous to individuals who adore fashion. The reasons behind this are various and extremely dramatic because this applies to refined boutiques to kawaii culture and a host of other fashion trends.

However, for first time visitors to Harajuku then clearly you have many dimensions to this stunning part of Tokyo which flows naturally into Omotesando. One major attraction is the Meiji Jingu shrine which is a stunning Shinto religious place of worship. The grounds are enormous and the natural flow of nature and Shinto is enshrined by the beautiful design and landscape which works magically together.

Therefore, the Meiji Jingu is a must place to visit in Tokyo because individuals can contemplate in the spacious surroundings and enjoy the adorable garden. Also, the freedom of the Shinto faith is a rich blessing because you don’t have any restrictions on dress sensibilities, no overt missionary work, and of course Shinto and nature are embedded together. Given this, the stunning architecture of the main religious area blends naturally with the environment. The various walks within the grounds are also very therapeutic and it is easy to forget that you are in central Tokyo. If you are lucky, then you may witness a wedding, special event or see Shinto holy people walking around in unique dress styles related to their faith.

Another amazing aspect of the Meiji Jingu is that just outside the main gate you will often see young adults dressed in amazing outfits. This applies to Lolita fashion, cosplay and other unique trends which can be found in this part of Tokyo. Therefore, within seconds people pass from the world of new fashion vibes and daring styles to the uniqueness of the Shinto faith. However, because of the laidback nature of Shintoism everything seems natural.

Within minutes of leaving the main Harajuku Yamanote train station you either enter the world of religion or the world of fashion. Of course, for tourists, they will enter both worlds and enjoy a nice walk in Yoyogi Park. Turning to the fashion angle, then the Takeshita-dori is extremely busy because so many youngsters who adore fashion and the subcultures of Harajuku visit this place. Indeed, for young Tokyoites it is “a rite of passage” and the same applies to young people visiting Harajuku from surrounding prefectures which include Chiba, Kanagawa, and Saitama.

The beauty of Harajuku and Omotesando is that the Takeshita-dori is a million miles away from the fashion vibes of the main street which connects these two amazing fashion districts. Therefore, the youthful nature of the Takeshita-dori, kawaii culture, Lolita fashion, mainstream fashion, casual fashion, exquisite styles, and so much more, can be found within the same environment. Given this, within minutes you enter different fashion zones and styles and the same applies to the architecture. Also, the backstreets of Harajuku going towards Shibuya and similar backstreets in Omotesando are laden with casual fashion companies and independent and daring boutiques.

Omotesando Hills on the main street which connects Harajuku and Omotesando is blessed with fantastic boutiques. The architecture of this shopping mall is also very stylish and inside you have a mystical feel about the place because of the layout and lighting. Exquisite boutiques follow naturally inside and this applies to Adore, Anterpima, Apartment Department, Betsey Johnson, Black Fleece, Escada Sport, iliann leob, Kiwa Sylphy, Martinique Le Conte, Milly, Tiara, Oriental News, Patrizia Pepe Firenze (Incontro) Tour H. creer (Merveille H.), Tracy Reese, Yves Saint Laurent, and Zara.

If you visit (http://www.omotesandohills.com/english/ ) the website of Omotesando Hills then you will note that you have many companies inside which cater for lifestyle and beauty. A partial list of companies related to this angle includes Createur Reveal (nail salon), hair make Pas de deux (hair salon), le bois (spa and beauty treatment), M.A.C. (cosmetics), and shu uemura beauty boutique (cosmetics).

Another recent angle to Harajuku and Omotesando is the new Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku complex which highlights fashion and other angles related to the area. The nickname of this place is Omohara and not only is this mall blessed with sophisticated boutiques but also you have a nice garden and places to sit outside. Omohara links both Harajuku and Omotesando together therefore the name Omohara is most suitable.

Inside this elegant building you have many exquisite boutiques and various different fashion trends. Fashion companies located within Omohara applies to The Shel’tter Tokyo, Charms, American Eagle Outfitters, Minnetonka, Laboratory Work ReCurrent, Pink Trick, Rady, Rione Doras, Juge ETTA, Loaves, Phoebe, Roomy’s, Amo’s Style by Triumph, Tommy Hilfiger, Cheek by Archives, Choosy Chu, Glam Baby, Flag, Goa, Humor Shop by A-net, and Jewelna Rose.

Also, within Omohara you have lifestyle stores and places to relax and enjoy your shopping experience. The rooftop observatory is also a real delight and clearly this attraction is extremely appealing. Therefore, Omohara, Omotesando Hills and Laforet Harajuku are collectively creating a real buzz and vibe. This buzz and vibe continues within independent boutiques like 6%DOKIDOKI throughout both fashion districts and this is what is so special about Harajuku and Omotesando. Simply put, the amazing diversity and creativity of both districts is not only a gem for Tokyo but it is also “an international fashion gem” for all fashion lovers.

Laforet Harajuku (http://www.laforet.ne.jp/) is an iconic store alongside Shibuya 109 and Marui One in Shinjuku. Within Laforet Harajuku you have a plethora of diverse boutiques which cater for many different styles. Laforet Harajuku just like Shibuya 109 is “a rite of passage” for fashion lovers in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures. Boutiques like Deicy, Topshop, Nomine, Lowrys Farm, and so many other amazing boutiques can be found in this fantastic fashion zone.

Harajuku and Omotesando are must places to visit if you adore Japanese and international fashion. The independent spirit of companies like 6%DOKIDOKI to the buzzing casual scene in the backstreets is a real treasure. Similarly, mainstream fashion and exquisite styles can be found in so many stores and fantastic shopping malls. At the same time, the Meiji Jingu is a reminder of “the spiritual dimension” to this lovely part of Tokyo providing individuals seek solace. Overall, both districts are extremely special and collectively they provide a fantastic destination to visit.

Japan to open famous Tokyo fashion areas internationally to highlight “vibrant culture”

Kanako Itamae and Lee Jay Walker

Modern Tokyo Times

The government of Japan is increasingly becoming aware of the “soft power” of this unique nation. Internationally the younger generation and people of all ages who adore Japan have a much more diverse image of this country. This notably applies to the fabulous fashion scene of Tokyo, anime, manga, PlayStations, maid café, cosplay, kawaii culture, and other powerful images of modernity which belong to this thriving culture.

Of course, traditional culture remains vibrant and entrenched within the brain when it applies to the rich culture and heritage of Nara, Kyoto, Nikko, and other famous places. Similarly, the unique aspect of Japanese art in the pre-Tokugawa period, ukiyo-e during the Tokugawa period and early Meiji era, and the powerful interconnections with France in the art field in the Meiji period and up until the middle of the twentieth century, is a wonder to behold. Alongside this you have the Japanese tea ceremony, kabuki, ikebana, the Japanese garden, amazing castles, kimono, kanzashi, Japanese ceramics, and a wealth of unique features which are too numerous to mention.

Therefore, when you combine the ultra-modernity of major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and others; then mix these amazing cities with traditional areas like Nara, Nikko, Koyasan, Kyoto, and other fabulous places; it isn’t surprising that you have such an amazing mix of unique cultural aspects to Japan. In the recent past the richness of Japanese culture was firmly based on high culture, Buddhism, Shintoism, traditional ceremonies and many other areas that have been previously mentioned. However, by the late 1980s and early 1990s, and continuing today, major developments took hold in many diverse areas. Of course, Japanese animation and manga was well known prior to the 1980s but the collective international exposure, along with new features related to fashion and other powerful images, really took off and keeps on sprouting up new ideas.

In the area of fashion famous shopping stores places like Laforet Harajuku, Shibuya 109 and Marui One are internationally adored and extremely iconic. In recent times a new shopping mall called Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku (Omohara) also promises much. This applies to the vibrancy of Omohara, interior design, prime location, and adorable boutiques to be found inside this new shopping mall. The beauty of famous fashion districts in cities like Tokyo and Osaka is that they never stand still. Therefore, new styles come and go and various themes related to art and architecture is also part of the reality of fashion for many boutiques based in trendy districts.

Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, and a few other individuals, laid a powerful foundation stone for Japanese fashion in the 1980s and their spirit and vibes continue today. In more recent times you have fashion designers like Sebastian Masuda (6%DOKIDOKI), Takashi Aoki (Macaronic) and other amazing individuals like Hitomi Nomura (Grimoire). Indeed, Sebastian Masuda who is also a visual stylist along with being a designer fuses the past with the vitality of fresh thinking in the modern world. This applies to his rich knowledge and appreciation of individuals like Rune Naito who was so instrumental in laying a powerful backdrop to kawaii culture based on his art and illustrations. Rune Naito sadly passed away in 2007 but his spirit and creativity lives on and it is this rich diversity which blesses the Tokyo and Japanese fashion scene.

The powerful feature of Japanese fashion is the collective because individuals including Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, Yohji Yamamoto, Sebastian Masuda, Tsumori Chisato, Junya Watanabe, Yoshie Itabashi, Takashi Aoki, Chiharu Kikuchi, and many others like Hitomi Nomura, have provided many unique and creative sparks. These powerful and diverse dynamics therefore opened up a new creative buzz which appealed within Japan and then internationally.

Therefore, the government of Japan wants to highlight the powerful nature of Japanese “soft power” and utilize this in the cultural, economic, and tourist arena. After all, these three aspects naturally overlap. Not surprisingly the new overseas shopping areas will be based on powerful fashion districts in Tokyo. This notably applies to Harajuku, Ginza, and Shibuya because these districts are internationally famous and the same must be stated about Shinjuku.

A ministry spokesperson for the government of Japan commented that the “export of whole fashion streets named after famous districts such as Harajuku” is planned to be opened. The main target market currently is America, China, South Korea, France and India but other nations are also on the list when it applies to future projections. Yusuke Kawamura who works at the Daiwa Institute of Research stated that “Young people in Asia, the United States and some European nations really admire Japan’s design and fashion sense…Thus, the idea of exporting shopping areas to other countries is good. Clothes and other goods sold at small boutiques tend to be more popular than products from large brands.”

The above comment highlights the need for the ministry to work and create a formula for smaller boutiques which grab the international headlines. This applies to a support mechanism which focuses on monetary related issues, international business expertize, and other important areas.

Overall, the government of Japan should be focusing on the “soft power” of this nation. After all, many individuals are fascinated about many different angles to Japan and the younger generation internationally is more exposed to the power of Japanese “soft power” than at any other time in history. From an economic and cultural point of view the new thinking about creating famous fashion areas internationally is extremely progressive and based on sound thinking. The idea is also to highlight the power of anime, manga, and traditional Japanese food. Therefore, with the enormous pulling power of Japan related to traditional culture and a vibrant modern culture, this new approach should be extremely rewarding.

Harajuku fashion district and its response to March 11: Sebastian Masuda

Michel Lebon and Lee Jay Walker

Modern Tokyo Times

Harajuku is famous for fashion because this part of Tokyo is awash with stunning boutiques. If you adore kawaii culture then you are spoilt for choice in trendy Harajuku and not only this, the elegant Omotesando Hills is blessed with amazing fashion companies. Also, the main street linking the districts of Harajuku and Omotesando is iconic because you have a “Paris feel” about the place from a European perspective. Aoyama and Shibuya are also very close to Harajuku and Omotesando. Therefore, how would this part of Tokyo respond to the devastating events of March 11?

At first, the district of Harajuku was in shock just like the entire city of Tokyo because hourly reports were stressing more bad news. With each new day during the first few weeks of the brutal tsunami the death total kept on increasing. Also, daily coverage and harrowing videos was a clear reminder of the utter devastation which was unleashed on the Tohoku region and surrounding prefectures along the coast.

The Fukushima nuclear crisis and continuing aftershocks meant that a “psychological war” was going on in the minds of some individuals. Clearly, each person, family, and group of friends, had different opinions because many individuals just got on with life. However, for others the pressure was mounting and the constant aftershocks along with daily news about the ongoing crisis in Fukushima meant that times were hard.

Obviously, the reality of the first few weeks meant that “the normal Tokyo landscape” had been altered within the psyche, irrespective if the individual was sturdy or had self-doubts about the current situation. Either way, the environment was more quiet and subdued and issues like fashion, drinking with friends, enjoying a coffee and relaxing, and other daily norms, was on a backburner. This in itself meant that trendy fashion districts in the first few weeks felt extremely strange and it wouldn’t be until the second week in April and onwards before things began to feel more normal.

However, within the fashion community of Harajuku one famous fashion designer wanted to reach out to the younger generation who visit Harajuku, to support people who had lost so much in Tohoku and other regions hit by the tsunami, and to show the world that the dynamism of Harajuku was alive. Therefore, the dynamic Sebastian Masuda who is the founder of 6%DokiDoki (6%DOKIDOKI) and a very independent fashion designer, stepped up to the plate and fused his creativity in order to provide assistance in many different ways. The result of his thinking led to the Mighty Harajuku Project whereby fashion lovers would bond together in order to support each other and help people who had suffered so much.

In another article about Sebastian Masuda by Modern Tokyo Times it was stated that “Sebastian Masuda was shocked by the events which engulfed the north-eastern-Tohoku region on March 11 and which continues to beset this part of Japan. This applies to the huge loss of life, the ongoing homeless problem, whole communities being destroyed, thousands of bodies being washed up along the coast, and the ongoing nuclear cloud hanging over Fukushima.”

“In Harajuku the creativity of this fashion district which Sebastian Masuda genuinely cares about, also provides its own distinctive community. Irrespective if this applies to locals, people who often visit Harajuku because of the buzz it creates or to workers who commute to Harajuku.”

“Therefore, Sebastian Masuda focused on all the positives and energy of Harajuku and came up with the “Mighty Harajuku Project.” The purpose of this project is to help the disadvantaged who have suffered so much since the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on March 11; and to give encouragement and support to people who utilize the energy and environment of Harajuku because so many people are still bewildered by recent events.”

The comments above apply to events between March 11 and the middle of April in 2011. After all, during this period you had massive uncertainty because the mass media was stating conflicting reports. Therefore, with daily news about death, the fear of radiation, hundreds of aftershocks, and genuine bewilderment; Sebastian Masuda and the Mighty Harajuku Project brought about solidarity, care, and highlighted the vibrancy of this district despite all the mayhem that was happening in the initial period.

The Mighty Harajuku Project was also telling the world that the “heart of Tokyo was still ticking.” Not only this, the fashion conscious younger generation connected to far away districts in Tohoku and other areas hit by the brutal events of March 11. This highlighted “the spirit of Harajuku” and the “unity of Japan” during dark times. It also helped individuals who are part and parcel of the fashion scene to come together and support each other.

The spirit of the “Mighty Harajuku Project” is based on hope, compassion, collective responsibility, showing the vibrancy of Harajuku, and telling the world that the future will be reshaped by new creativity. Therefore, Sebastian Masuda and the world of “kawaii culture” and “chaotic punk” reached out internally and externally during difficult times.

Overall, the dynamics of the Mighty Harajuku Project worked a treat because it provided “many new rays of sunshine.” The stunning color schemes of 6% DokiDoki fashion could be seen through the thought patterns of Sebastian Masuda. This meant that Harajuku was showing its real power and energy, and it is this spirit which makes Harajuku so special.

Victoria Centeno (http://www.victoriacosplay.com/) is a stunning cosplayer from the United States and in these images she shows the grace of herself and connects easily with the fans of Hatsune Miku. In the world of reality and unreality, then for many individuals Hatsune Miku is the perfect girlfriend, friend, character, and for cosplay lovers, then an amazing character to imitate. Therefore, Modern Tokyo Times was honored when the exquisite Victoria Centeno agreed to model in the image of Hatsune Miku.

In the world of cosplay Victoria Centeno is called “Cosplay Girl” in the United States and clearly this stunning cosplayer and model is highly respected and in demand. Over several years her reputation keeps on rising because of her sultry looks and amazing versatility. This means that Victoria Centeno, just like Hatsune Miku, can bridge cultures and different thought patterns because of her gracefulness.

Victoria Centeno comments on her website that “I work as a full time preschool teacher and part time model. My cosplay has been featured on multiple sites including Entertainment Weekly, MTV’s Blog and Rolling Stone. I have also appeared in Latina Magazine and was named the Queen of Cosplay by the Modern Tokyo Times and Axiom Magazine. I am Miss April in the Angry Girls 2012 calendar. My image has been featured in everything from television commercials to comic books. I’m an official Slave Leia model for Gentle Giant Studios and have worked as a booth babe for other companies and products such as the Terminal Alice comic. I’ve participated in the Women of Wonder Day charity event for the past two years. I’ve been cosplaying since 2006.”

Therefore, with cosplay and modeling running through her veins the “desire” of Modern Tokyo Times was for Victoria Centeno and Hatsune Miku to meet in the world of cosplay. After all, (http://www.victoriacosplay.com/) anyone who views this website will note how this beautiful cosplayer can play stunning cosplay roles of adoreable characters. This meant that the image of Hatsune Miku which is so appealing in Japan and internationally, had to be played by a lady who could bring her unique and sultry looks to this character, and without a shadow of a doubt Victoria Centeno filled the bill one hundred per cent.

Hatsune Miku

In Japan even people outside of the world of anime and the world of Vocaloid understand the image of Hatsune Miku. This means that for the world of cosplay Hatsune Miku is also a dream ticket because of her gracefulness, stunning figure, adorable features, and so forth. Not only this, Hatsune Miku is extremely cute and her persona changes for all individuals who love this character.

Therefore, just like the professional cosplayer should enter the world of the character that they portray; then the cosplayer and Hatsune Miku meet perfectly in the middle in the world of reality and unreality. The persona of Hatsune Miku changes for each individual and alternatively the cosplayer changes their individual persona to blend naturally with the character they are highlighting.

Clearly, the images taken by the esteemed photographer, Carl Maiorino, shows that Victoria Centeno changed her persona. Therefore, after putting on the beautiful costume the sultry looks of this elegant cosplayer entered the world of Hatsune Miku.

The digital avatar from Japan is now big business throughout the world and the popularity will surely continue because of the versatility of Hatsune Miku. Also, the lovely eyes and pony tails appeal sexually to other individuals and given that you can’t argue with Hatsune Miku, then for many this character is the “perfect girlfriend” in the world of reality and unreality.

Therefore, the fan base of Hatsune Miku keeps on growing and runs into the millions. Not only this, major companies like Toyota want to join the bandwagon because of the marketability of the “adorable Hatsune Miku.” Indeed, Victoria Centeno looks “like a refreshing ray of sunshine” in a world which often is surrounded by stress or mundaneness. However, when you see the elegance and beauty of Victoria Centeno in such stunning cosplay images of Hatsune Miku, then you can understand why some people prefer the “perfect vocaloid.”

The Anime Nation website commented that “No other character in the history of anime has ever become quite so widely and lovingly embraced by not only otaku but by mainstream Japanese society and the larger world. Hatsune Miku may be the most fascinating character ever to appear in the anime world because so many different attributes concentrate within her persona. By design and circumstance, Hatsune Miku encapsulates and represents a greater spectrum of concepts interesting to otaku than any other character to have ever emerged from the anime/manga universe.”

“Otaku have been fascinated with the concept of a digital idol since the 1985 OVA Megazone 23. Hatsune Miku is literally a real Eve Tokimatsuri, a completely fictional digital idol singer whose popularity has spilled over into actual mainstream society. Hatsune Miku is, in effect, an anime concept actually developing and existing in real life.”

In a past article featuring the adorable Victoria Centeno she commented that “I enjoy breathing life into characters that I love and respect. Cosplay is a form of self and artistic expression. I love the process and being creative.”

This says everything about this charming and sophisticated lady who balances such a busy work schedule with complete professionalism. Victoria Centeno bridges different characters and cultures with ease because of her professionalism, stunning features, vibrancy, and love of cosplay. Indeed, these characteristics for the lovers of Hatsune Miku match very well.

Modern Tokyo Times would like to thank Victoria Centeno for being such a graceful and beautiful model. Also, Modern Tokyo Times would like to thank Carl Maiorino who took such amazing images. It is hoped that one day Victoria Centeno will grace Tokyo and witness the power of cosplay in Japan.

Tokyo fashion in Shinjuku: Marui One is amazing for Lolita, Kawaii, & other unique styles

Sarah Deschamps and Lee Jay Walker

Modern Tokyo Times

In Tokyo the names of Laforet Harajuku, Shibuya 109, and Marui One, stand out for being amazing stores to visit when it comes to fashion. If you adore kawaii fashion, Goth styles, punk, Gothloli, Lolita, Visual Kei, and so forth, then Mauri One in Shinjuku is a must. After all, the choice available is amazing and the environment blends well with the many boutiques which provide fantastic styles.

Famous boutiques which have enhanced the Tokyo fashion vibe can be found in Marui One because clearly they understand the significance of this major department store in the heart of Shinjuku. Indeed, it is thanks to some of these boutiques that the fashion industry in Japan is so famous internationally when it comes to unique styles. After all, many of the boutiques in Marui One have enabled the unique fashion trends of Tokyo to expand internationally.

Of course, the same boutiques can be found in other department stores and are located in many other cities. However, it is the unique fashion angle of Tokyo which attracts the younger generation from all over Japan and internationally. Yes, other major cities like Osaka and Kobe are blessed with stunning fashion districts and often alternative trends have begun in Osaka. Yet internationally it is the streets of Harajuku, Shibuya, and Shinjuku, which hit the headlines when it comes to youth culture, subcultures, and the latest trends in fashionable Tokyo.

In fairness, it is a little harsh on Kansai because it was this area that was the initial bedrock of Lolita fashion in Japan but internationally Tokyo gets more international attention than Osaka. Early boutiques which began this movement many decades ago applies to Milk and Pretty (known as Angelic Pretty in time), Pink House, The Stars Shine Bright, and Metamorphose temps de fille.

Therefore, turning back to Marui One it is clear that the strong background of some of these boutiques have enhanced the growing reputation of this department store in Tokyo. Marui One also took a unique approach and collectively it is working like “a dream ticket.” Given this, stunning boutiques including Angelic Pretty; Metamorphose; Baby, The Stars Shines Bright; Alice and The Pirates; h.Naoto; Jesus Diamante; and many others, moved into Marui One because they understood the dynamics of this amazing store.

Angelic Pretty comments on their website that “Angelic Pretty provides adorable clothing covered in lace, frills and ribbons like that of the fairytale princess you dreamed about as a little girl. We want girls to never lose sight of that dream — And this is a brand for girls who want to keep that dream alive.”

Metamorphose comments that “Metamorphose is an adorable brand of Lolita fashion made for everyone, best described as EGL or Elegant Gothic Lolita.”

“Almost everyone has the desire to “transform” one’s self, be it into an angel, someone who is more elegant, or even back to the time they were a little girl. With this concept in mind, we created the Metamorphose brand. In order to assist you in your “transformation”, while not being a slave to the current fashion, we continue to conceive cute EGL fashion.”

In truth, the companies highlighted in this article are real treasures because they stand out for being unique and providing a different angle to the diverse Tokyo fashion scene. Therefore, if you want to feel the vibes and unique styles of Tokyo then a visit to Marui One is a must because you have so many different styles to view. Also, the quality of the clothing stands out and the color schemes, creative angle, and unique thought patterns are clear for all to see.

In an earlier article by Modern Tokyo Times it was stated that fashion at Marui One applies to “…fantasy fashion, romantic designs, modern kimono, Gothic Lolita, Sweet Lolita, dreamy fashion, casual styles, visual kei, and other amazing trends. Therefore, Marui One is like “a mirror” of parts of Harajuku because this store is internationally famous. Marui have many different stores in Shinjuku (and throughout Tokyo) but Marui One stands out because of its individualism.”

Therefore, if you adore fashion then a visit to Marui One is most rewarding.

Harajuku is famous for fashion, the latest trends and the atmosphere is dynamic throughout the entire area. Therefore, Harajuku is one of the most popular places to visit in Tokyo. The beauty of this part of Tokyo is that when you leave the Harajuku train station on the Yamanote Line you have two distinct options and people often mix both together if they are tourists. This applies to visiting the stunning Meiji Shrine which is a major Shinto place of worship and browsing around the diverse fashion area.

The Shinto religion is the indigenous faith of Japan and unlike Buddhism it fuses Japanese folklore with history and mythology. Often you will see Shinto shrines and small statutes in the mountains of Japan and everything appears natural.

The Meiji Shrine is a fantastic place to visit because nature and Shinto blends naturally and tourists, Tokyoites and religious people feel at ease immediately. The serenity and architecture amongst the beauty of nature is very powerful and time and space will mean different things to each individual. However, you can certainly feel the pulse of something irrespective if it is Shinto mysticism or your own personal feelings.

Buddhist temples dot the landscape in Japan and the architecture is very appealing. At the same time you have many stunning gardens in special Buddhist temples which fuse ethics, nature, and space. However, the kami spirits of Shintoism seem more mysterious and irrespective if you visit the Meiji Shrine or the mountains of Japan; the mystery of life and nature does seem alive in Shintoism.

Another beautiful aspect of the Shinto faith is that it also allows reality and does not seek to enforce pressure on individuals. Therefore, before entering the main entrance of the Meiji Shrine in Harajuku you will see young Japanese people dressed in diverse styles of fashion. Indeed, the closeness of the fashion hub of Harajuku and the Meiji Shrine shows the nature of modern day Shintoism because no pressure is being put on fashion lovers who are within meters of the main entrance.

Leaving the religious world behind and visiting the fashion areas of Harajuku is a good way to understand Japan and Shintoism. It is about co-existence in the modern world and the free spirit of Shintoism and the diverse nature of the kami spirit which exists in nature and animism.

Literally within one minute or two minutes of leaving Harajuku train station you are either in the environment of the Meiji Shrine, Yoyogi Park or the fashion area of the Takeshita Dori or the more upmarket main street. Therefore, the choice is yours and this is what makes Harajuku so special.

Also, the more you venture in Harajuku then you will also enter Omotesando and the fashion changes to high brands and exquisite fashion within minutes. In truth, high quality and individualistic brands can be found throughout Harajuku and Omotesando and 6%DOKIDOKI and Tracy Reese sum up the fashion area.

This applies to the striking individualism of the fashion designer Sebastian Masuda and his dedicated staff at 6%DOKIDOKI because this fashion company represents the Harajuku feel and the spirit of freedom. The color schemes at 6%DOKIDOKI are amazing and the style is vibrant and energetic.

Meanwhile Tracy Reese represents the elegance of fashion in America and both companies represent the richness and beauty of the boutiques which can be found in this buzzing area. Therefore, just like the pluralism of Shintoism you have the rich diversity of fashion in Harajuku and Omotesando.

In a past article it was stated that “Internationally famous designers like Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto provided a strong image for Japanese fashion and their energy was noticeable in the 1980s and onwards. Yet younger designers and famous individuals are changing the evolving fashion scene and Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Sebastian Masuda, Rei Kawakubo, Nobu Kitamura, Junya Watanabe, Takashi Aoki, Tsumori Chisato, Yoshie Itabashi, Kuniko Kato, Chiharu Kikuchi, and others, are all maintaining the freshness of fashion in Japan alongside companies like Grimoire, Candy, Macaronic, Metamorphose temps de fille, and many others.”

Therefore, the energy “….of exquisite fashion and individualistic fashion designers can be felt through the entire area which links Aoyama, Omotesando, Harajuku and Shibuya. In many ways Omotesando represents all the beauty of this area because it links high quality fashion companies with independent and stylish boutiques and in the backstreets you can find street fashion. Also, you have many famous fashion stores like Laforet Harajuku, Shibuya 109 and Omotesando Hills within easy reach of each other. ”

If you are a first time visitor to Tokyo then Harajuku should be high on your list because you can just soak up the atmosphere and the changes which can be found in this diverse part of Tokyo. From the heart of Japanese religion which is represented at the Meiji Shrine to the creativity of fashion, kawaii culture, and designers like Sebastian Masuda.

In Harajuku the old world and new world does not clash because the environment is based on harmony and co-existence. Also, the Meiji Shrine is blessed with stunning walks and this enables people to contemplate and think about the richness of this life.

Fashion in Japan isn’t just about Tokyo because Osaka, Kobe, and other parts of Japan, are blessed with stylish and elegant fashion. However, when it comes to the abundance of fashion districts then Tokyo is difficult to rival in any other city in the world. Therefore, if you adore fashion this amazing mega-city is a must place to visit and this applies to searching the smaller districts and major parts of Tokyo.

Of course you will have sophisticated and diverse fashion in Milan, Paris, London, New York, Prague, Shanghai, Barcelona, and other major fashion cities in the world. However, in Tokyo you have so much variety and when you mix this with the rich environment, huge population and ongoing creativity; then it becomes abundantly clear that Tokyo is one of the best fashion cities in the world.

In truth, it is very difficult to judge which city is the best fashion place because you have so many variables and language issues. Therefore, research may be tainted by geographic and linguistic factors and fashion also depends on individual tastes, influences of culture and other important areas.

Despite this, Tokyo is amongst the crème de la crème because of the magnitude of places to visit and the sheer vibrancy of so many fashion districts. Yes, Harajuku, Ginza, and Shibuya hog the limelight but the collective nature of fashion in Tokyo is what makes this city tick. Given this, you are spoilt for choice and many individuals prefer smaller districts like Shimokitazawa, Jiyugaoka, Daikanyama, Nakano, Nakameguro, Kichijoji and other parts of this amazing city.

The uniqueness of Tokyo fashion is that you have so many districts to visit and in some of the lesser named districts you will feel the buzz of individualism. Not only this, vintage fashion is thriving but with a Tokyo vibe and irrespective of your fashion it is a fact that you will be catered for in this ultra-modern city.

Aoyama, Harajuku, Omotesando, Ginza, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Roppongi Hills and Yurakucho are more internationally famous and their reputations are justified. However, the lesser named districts’ enables Tokyo to become such a powerful fashion powerhouse. Also, Ebisu, Ikebukuro and Ueno have their supporters and the west side of Ikebukuro is awash with fashion while the east side is always buzzing. Indeed, the rise of Ikebukuro is ongoing and for many Tokyoites this district deserves to be placed in the top tier of fashion districts in Tokyo.

In Ikebukuro you have fantastic fashion stores like Lumine, Marui, Parco, Seibu Department Store, Tobu Department Store, and many others. Also, Esola is another stylish place to visit in trendy Ikebukuro. Every boutique in Esola is extremely stylish and this applies to Actuel, Amphi, Barbie Store, Beardsley Gallardagalante, Blue Bell Market, DouDou, Elleva, FRAMeWORK, Free’s Mart, Jolly Boutique, Muriel & Mercuria, Nuit et Jour Spick and Span, Opaque Clip, Royal Flash, and Turno Jeana.

Aoyama and Omotesando are amazing fashion districts and both places are avant-garde and sophisticated because you have endless exquisite boutiques. The architecture is also part of the image and in Aoyama and Omotesando the crème de la crème of fashion boutiques can be found and this applies to Japanese and international companies.

In an earlier article by Modern Tokyo Times about Aoyama it was stated that “The sophisticated scene in this fashion area applies to countless famous boutiques being located in a high octane part of this district. This partial list includes Comme des Garcons, Prada, Gucci, 10 Corso Como, Donna Karan, Loveless, Michael Kors, L’eclaireur, Vivienne Westwood, Issey Miyake, A Bathing Ape, Jil Sander, Yohji Yamamoto, Artisan, Stella McCartney, Paul Smith, Cynthia Rowley, Helmut Lang, Hanae Mori, Mark Jacobs, Tsumori Chisato, Costume National, Carbane de Zucca, Diane Von Furstenberg, Undercover, Frapbois, Design Works, and many other refined companies like Deuxieme Classe.”

“Also, you have stylish and exquisite shopping stores in this exclusive fashion district which includes Boutique W, Dress Camp, Flair Aoyama, Loveless and other stunning shopping stores. Therefore, Roberto Cavalli picked an ideal location because the proximity of Aoyama to Omotesando, Harajuku and Shibuya means the entire area is awash with creativity, exquisite boutiques, energy, sophistication, changing styles and one long and continuous fashion scene, which would grace any major city in the world.”

Meanwhile in Omotesando Hills, which is a truly elegant fashion mall, you have amazing boutiques and this applies to Adore, Anterpima, Betsey Johnson, Black Fleece, Escada Sport, Tour H. creer (Merveille H.), Yves Saint Laurent, Zara, Tracy Reese, Kiwa Sylphy, iliann loeb, Milly, Tiara, Apartment Department, Martinique Le Conte, Patrizia Pepe Firenze (Incontro), Oriental News and so many others. In truth, it is unfair to just name these companies because every boutique is charming and elegant and the architecture of Omotesando Hills inside is extremely sophisticated and stylish.

Omotesando is extremely diverse when it comes to the different types of fashion which can be found in this fantastic fashion district. Therefore, you will find crème de la crème fashion companies in the main area but in the backstreets you have many independent fashion boutiques, casual fashion, kawaii boutiques, and other types of stores. Also, because Omotesando is between Aoyama and Harajuku, this means that the entire area is one huge fashion hub and when Shibuya is included then it shows the power of Tokyo.

In every fashion district just mentioned the age groups, fashion styles and other factors are unique to each area. Not only this, the age group and fashion style is changeable and diverse in many districts and this notably applies to Harajuku, Therefore, while Harajuku may be famous for kawaii culture, this is only one element of this adorable fashion district which caters to many different styles and age groups.

Kawaii culture in Tokyo goes back several decades but this unique style which belongs to Japan continues to develop and modify. 6%DOKIDOKI is part and parcel of kawaii culture and the ongoing vibrancy of this unique style. However, Sebastian Masuda (6%DOKIDOKI) does not pertain to any single style because he is a creator and deep thinker. Given this, it is clear that Sebastian Masuda is not a follower of any one single fashion because his style is unique and his international reputation keeps on growing.

In Shibuya you have a hub of fashion within Shibuya 109 and the vibes of Center Gai and Koen Dori are alive with fashion conscious people. Shibuya means high octane fashion and the famous crossing is mega busy. Also, the youthfulness of Shibuya and Harajuku can be felt powerfully and these districts are internationally famous.

Grimoire is another amazing fashion company and Dolly-kei and other fashion styles can be seen and this store is what makes Tokyo fashion so great. The same applies to 6%DOKIDOKI because you have real venture, innovation and fresh ideas. Grimoire is managed by the elegant looking Hitomi Nomura and is owned by Naoaki Tobe.

In Shinjuku and Nishi Shinjuku you have major department stores and this includes Isetan, Keio, Lumine, Marui, Mitsukoshi ALCOTT, Odakyu, Takashimaya and Mylord. Each department store provides quality of the highest and if you are a fashion guru then you need time to check the ample fashion on show.

Marui One is extremely diverse and caters for modern kimono, princess fashion, casual styles, fantasy fashion, Visual Kei, Lolita, Gothic, and dreamy fashion. Therefore, Mauri One is a great shopping experience and Isetan and Lumine also understand the pulse of Tokyo because both stores are creative and exquisite.

Overall, the fashion scene in Tokyo is simply amazing and because of this you have international fashion and internal tourists visiting this mega-city all year round.

Harajuku fashion, culture and the Meiji Jingu shrine in Tokyo

Sarah Deschamps and Lee Jay Walker

Modern Tokyo Times

Harajuku is an amazing part of Tokyo because of the richness of fashion, culture, and the magnificent Meiji Jingu shrine, where the flow of Shintoism can be felt. Indeed, the pace of life and the diversity provided by Harajuku and adjacent areas of Omotesando, Aoyama, and Shibuya, is simply amazing. This applies to various types of fashion styles and the natural buzz which can be felt in the entire area.

However, Harajuku is more mystical because of the Meiji Jingu shrine where tourists can enjoy the splendor of Shintoism. Also, it is abundantly clear that the Shinto faith and style of architecture blends naturally with nature. Not only this, you don’t have any dress regulations and everything seems natural.

The grounds of the Meiji Jingu at the back of the shrine are enormous and you can enjoy a relaxing walk and soaking up the atmosphere. Therefore, tourists and Tokyoites cherish their time in this place.

Meiji Jingu shrine is simplistic but with a graceful feel and a reminder of the hidden culture of Tokyo amidst the bustle of fashionable Harajuku. The enormous Torii gate is a reminder of your mortality because the splendor and strength that it signifies, clearly shows the frailty of this life.

Very close to Meiji Jingu is Yoyogi Park and this park provides a spacious place to walk and sit down from time to time. In Yoyogi Park you will often see students who are training their acting lines and rehearsing openly. Therefore, Yoyogi Park fits in well with the ambience of Harajuku and like the Meiji Jingu shrine it provides a place to escape and relax.

However, for the young and trendy it is fashion which is the magnet for so many teenagers and young adults. Takeshita-dori is a very narrow street and full of fashion boutiques and places to sit down and drink. If you want to feel the energy of young Tokyoites and see fashion close up then this is the place to visit.

True to the nature and vibrancy of Harajuku is the fashion scene itself because while the Takeshita-dori is thronging with youthful crowds, it is clear that the backstreets of Omotesando are very different. The same applies to Omotesando Hills which is a fantastic shopping complex and the main road is blessed with exquisite boutiques. Also, at the top of the main road you will soon be entering the high octane fashion district of Aoyama where countless crème de la crème boutiques can be found.

Omotesando Hills is also very exclusive and high fashion can be seen and again the age range and style of fashion is very different from the boutiques that can be found along the Takeshita-dori. In this part of Harajuku which soon links with Omotesando you are entering a different world. This applies to exquisite international and Japanese boutiques.

Therefore, from the world of kawaii culture and Lolita style fashion, to top of the range brands and all in the blink of an eyelid. Also, along the main road you have a “Paris feel” but with “the uniqueness of Tokyo.”

If you visit the Meiji Jingu shrine first you will have entered the rich culture of Japan and the spirit world of the gods of Shinto. However, after leaving this place and entering the vibrant Takeshita-dori, then Tokyo becomes a beacon of youthful energy and kawaii culture. Yet when leaving the Takeshita-dori and walking towards Omotesando you will have entered a different world and this applies to high culture and exquisite boutiques.

However, true to the nature of Harajuku you also have trendy back streets in this district and the same applies to Omotesando. Therefore, you will encounter street fashion but of a distinctive quality. Also, the pace of life is slower and you can escape the madding crowds of the main fashion areas of this part of Tokyo.

Harajuku fashion is also unique and Harajuku girls take great pride in their appearance. The contrast of seeing a gothic Lolita girl near the Meiji Jingu shrine sums up Harajuku well because it is a mixture of the old world and the buzzing nature of teenage fashion. Therefore, if you are a first time visitor to Japan then Harajuku is well worth a visit because of the contrasts which are on offer.

Whatever your reasons are for being in Tokyo it is abundantly clear that you can feel a nice youthful energy in Harajuku. Therefore, the world of kawaii culture and Shintoism may seem like a world apart but in Harajuku it is a natural fusion and shows the mildness of the Shinto faith.

Harajuku is internationally famous and this notably applies to fashion but this district of Tokyo is not just a fashion paradise, it is also a place to connect with nature.

Tokyo fashion: four essential websites for fashion and consumer news

Michel Lebon and Lee Jay Walker

Modern Tokyo Times

http://www.lacarmina.com

Information about the vibrant nature of fashion in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and other major cities in Japan, is in huge demand. This applies to mainstream fashion, business factors, Japanese subculture and fashion, buzzing districts, new fashion movements, high range fashion, and a host of other factors. Therefore, this article is aimed at highlighting essential websites about the fashion scene and consumer news in Japan but with an emphasis on Tokyo.

Of course, you have amazing fashion in cities like Osaka and this notably applies to Namba and Umeda. In truth, Osaka is a “hidden global gem” because the sheer vibrancy of fashion in places like Namba and Umeda is amazing and these two districts would bless any major city in the world. However, sadly it is difficult to find a website which regularly updates about the fantastic fashion scene in Osaka. Therefore, the stunning style of Namba ladies remains hidden unlike the fashion scene in Harajuku in Tokyo which is internationally famous.

However, the JapanConsuming http://www.japanconsuming.com website focuses on the entire sector throughout Japan. Therefore, this highly recommended website is aimed at companies based in Japan, companies that are thinking about entering the Japanese market, and for all individuals who are focused on the consumer market in Japan. The client base tells the story about the influence of JapanConsuming because the list includes L’Oreal, Max Factor, Giorgio Armani, KPMG, Estee Lauder, Godiva, Tiffany, Celine, and a host of others.

Information applies to many factors including market entry, current trends, industry data analysis, and a host of essential areas related to the complex nature of business in Japan. Therefore, if consumer news in Japan is needed alongside a company which is focused on providing detailed information, then JapanConsuming is a must. After all, many companies like Nokia, Tesco, and many others, have found the market in Japan to be either too complex, inflexible, unable to adapt to different demands or have entered a market which is either saturated or not open to change based on various factors.

Tokyo Fashion http://tokyofashion.com/ is a very different type of website because this online magazine is focused on fashion trends in Tokyo, clothing, accessories, the changing scene, trendy districts, up to date news, and various other areas like kawaii culture. Tokyo Fashion website is interactive and this applies to new fashion images of street fashion and using Facebook and Twitter. Therefore, if you want to see visual images of individuals who adore fashion in Tokyo, alongside great information about ongoing events and new in vogue companies, then Tokyo Fashion online magazine will open up the vibrant scene of this mega city.

If you are an individual, company or media source who wants to understand the vibrant alternative scene of Tokyo then La Carmina is the lady to do this. This is based on her first-hand knowledge of the subcultures of Tokyo and the alternative fashion scene. Also, La Carmina is extremely elegant and stylish and this talented individual is clearly passionate about the areas she covers and Gothic Lolita and other fashion styles are highlighted.

Therefore, La Carmina http://www.lacarmina.com/blog/ is in huge demand and this applies to powerful international networks. La Carmina also opens up a new world and digs deep in order to highlight the latest alternative fashion trends, which are hitting and shaping the vibrant Tokyo scene. Her connections also enable La Carmina to stay one step ahead and in the world of alternative fashion and subcultures this is essential.

Style Arena http://www.style-arena.jp is an amazing website for regular news and lovely images of trendy Tokyoites. Therefore, if you want to know about fantastic suburbs to visit, latest fashion news and an abundance of amazing images which enable people to connect with trendy Tokyo – then Style Arena is a place to visit and see Tokyo up close.

Style Arena is administered by the Japan Fashion Association and Modern Tokyo Times certainly checks this fantastic website for news about “Tokyo Street Fashion.” Clearly, the Japan Fashion Association is showing the vibrancy of Tokyo fashion and aspects of culture in this amazing city. This website is a must for people who adore fashion and Tokyo because the contents and images are truly enlightening.

The websites highlighted were not mentioned by ranking but were based on a natural flow and this applies to JapanConsuming being based on the Japanese market unlike the other three websites being focused on Tokyo. Also, La Carmina’s website focuses on the alternative fashion scene and subcultures of Tokyo and this split the other two websites which have more in common, despite the style and layout being different.

Modern Tokyo Times is also aimed at being interactive and if individuals believe that other fashion and consumer websites should be highlighted, then please forward the appropriate website. Overall, these four websites provide many different angles and collectively they provide a powerful picture of the fashion scene in Tokyo.

Modern Tokyo Times

If you know little about Tokyo then you might be amazed by the fashion scene in places like Aoyama, Daikanyama, Ebisu, Ginza, Harajuku, Ikebukuro, Jiyugoaka, Omotesando, Shinjuku, and Shibuya, because these places are hot spots for fashion in Tokyo. Each area is distinctive in its own right and despite the closeness of Harajuku and Omotesando the fashion scene, styles, energy, and pace of events does change quickly.

This applies to the exquisite but exclusive Omotesando Hills which is very upmarket and you have state of the art buildings and a real feel of elegance. However, if you visit the backstreets of Omotesando then the environment is much more relaxed and a very youthful feel can be felt while browsing around small clothing shops. While the street zone near Harajuku train station is packed with teenagers and young adults and you can feel the atmosphere and vibes of the younger generation.

In Shibuya the fashion scene is also amazing but true to each main area it is clear that Shibuya is distinctive. Shinjuku is also a hub for fashion, shopping and entertainment and just like Shibuya you have huge department stores and both places are very lively.

However, the adult and wild side nature of parts of Shinjuku is missing in Shibuya because the area is aimed at younger adults and the reputation of Shibuya is one of safety and mega energy based on the clean environment and “place to be.” Therefore, if fashion, modernity, stylish environment, latest fads, creativity, and energy is what you love; then Shibuya offers all of this and despite the youthful nature of Shibuya, it is not exclusive providing you can mingle with the “in crowd.”

It is also noticeable that for Shibuya girls then hair is also important and clearly black hair is seen to be too stale and dull. Therefore, the in colors are blonde, light brown, reddish brown and other colors which break up the black hair stranglehold. This often goes hand in hand with punkish messed up hair with curls and other styles which are thrown into the mix.

Shibuya is not the sophisticated fashion look but in its simplicity it is fused with creativity and outlandish designs from time to time; therefore, the style is unique and energetic and like all fashionable trends it quickly moves on and regenerates itself.

In the 1990s the ganguro fashion scene hit Tokyo and Ikebukuro and Shibuya were known for this new craze but by 2000 this fashion peeked. However, just like punk music, the legacy lives on and mutates into new styles. This fashion craze was popular amongst teenage girls and young ladies in the early 20’s and dyed blonde or orange hair was part and parcel of this trend alongside a deep tan and white concealer which was used for lipstick. In time this fashion scene died away but other trends emerged and the attitude of the ganguro scene based on freedom remains strong but within new fashion movements.

Shibuya fashion is not just about extremes it is about a mixture of fashion styles and just like life, it is never static but always looking for a new creative feel. Shibuya 109 is a hub for fashion and keeps on drawing in the crowds. If you want the more daring side of Shibuya then boutiques like Candy is for you and the vibes of the Center Gai area and Koen Dori is also very pleasing.

What is certain is that fashionable people and unfashionable people alike will feel the rich and youthful energy of Shibuya, alongside the alternative minded fashion guru. Therefore, if you want to feel the teenage “within you” or if you are part of this generation, then Shibuya rekindles a rare energy and buzz whereby a world of carefree and individuality can bloom despite all the troubles of this world.
