The nation of Chad, along with other regional nations including Cameroon and Niger, decided to support Nigeria in its fight against Boko Haram. Regional nations, increasingly alarmed by the Sunni Islamist Takfiri terrorist group called Boko Haram, stepped in to help Nigeria because of the growing crisis in northeastern Nigeria. On top of this, regional nations became alarmed by border spillovers and the increasing threat of further expansion. Therefore, with Chad now being a pivotal regional nation in the fight against Boko Haram, then sadly this Sunni Islamist terrorist group is now stepping up attacks against Chad.
It is known that the latest terrorist attacks have killed at least 24 innocent people and sadly the final death toll may increase further. The triple suicide attack took place on the island of Loulou Fou, in Lake Chad. Therefore, while people were buying goods at the local market, three female suicide attackers struck and unleashed enormous devastation.
France 24 (with AFP and AP) reports “In recent months, Boko Haram Islamists, who this year declared allegiance to the Islamic State group, have stepped up attacks and suicide bombings on Chadian villages in the lake that lies close to the frontier with Nigeria.”
Sadly for Chad, terrorist attacks are increasing despite some progress being made in Nigeria against Boko Haram. Indeed, this Sunni Islamist Takfiri group often increases its activity to a broader area when facing growing pressure.
On November 9, 2015, the government of Chad declared a political state of emergency in the environment of Lake Chad. Despite this, the latest triple suicide attack shows that these emergency measures can’t prevent well-planned terrorist attacks.
According to recent reports it is widely believed that Boko Haram is losing territory and training camps within northeastern Nigeria. Yet the tenaciousness of Boko Haram, and past failures of the armed forces of Nigeria based on political intrigues, means that soft targets like markets and religious places of worship will come under increasing attacks. Therefore, the latest triple female suicide terrorist attack in Chad is further evidence of the expanding tentacles of Boko Haram despite losing territory in northeastern Nigeria.
