Biden should negate internal Saudi mechanisms: Mohammed bin Salman or the Muslim Brotherhood narrative?

President Biden of the United States of America appears to be involving himself over the Jamal Khashoggi affair. Hence, it seems that pressure will be put on Saudi Arabia to sideline Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the short-term based on the overtly biased accounts against this reformer. However, the importance of the Crown Prince is abundantly obvious in Saudi Arabia thus Biden should refrain from too much pressure.
The Crown Prince is a reformist concerning the modernization of the economy, the role of women in society, non-Muslim faiths, and returning Saudi Arabia to a non-expansionist Islam that isn’t based on spreading fundamentalism. This contrasts with Jamal Khashoggi who was a former friend of Osama bin Laden and who had a close association with President Erdogan of Turkey. Therefore, irrespective of the murky death of Khashoggi, he isn’t the cause célèbre to reset ties with Saudi Arabia.
Several years ago, the Crown Prince stated, “What happened in the last 30 years is not Saudi Arabia. What happened in the region in the last 30 years is not the Middle East. After the Iranian revolution in 1979, people wanted to copy this model in different countries, one of them is Saudi Arabia. We didn’t know how to deal with it. And the problem spread all over the world. Now is the time to get rid of it.”
Hence, the narrative against the Crown Prince and the eulogizing of Khashoggi is like a parallel universe. In a past article, the Modern Tokyo Times uttered, ““…the enemies of the Crown Prince who fear his modernization processes have created a fictional narrative about Khashoggi. Sadly, like usual, the gullible Western media circus seems to have fallen for the Muslim Brotherhood narrative. Hence, despite Khashoggi being lauded for supporting press freedom and other noble areas, the facts point in the opposite direction. After all, if Khashoggi supported press freedom then why did he befriend President Erdogan of Turkey and fellow cronies who support the Muslim Brotherhood? Surely, Khashoggi knew full well that hundreds of journalists had been arrested in Turkey and that tens of thousands of political prisoners languish in prison?”
The same article said, “Khashoggi felt at ease in Turkey despite the internal situation where any dissent by Kurds, Gulenists, or leftists equates to prison. Likewise, he didn’t mind mixing with political elites who support imprisoning journalists at the drop of a hat. Hence, the human rights angle is being overly politicized against the Crown Prince based on glossing over the facts of certain aspects of Khashoggi. The same applies to the fake moralizing of Erdogan who is extremely authoritarian.”
Irrespective of the findings of the US report on the killing of Khashoggi, it is essential that America doesn’t do the deeds of the Muslim Brotherhood by stealth. After all, it is the Crown Prince who is a reformer and not individuals like Erdogan – or the Muslim Brotherhood propaganda machine – that seeks to turn the clock back.
It goes without saying that the murder of Khashoggi was extremely shocking. However, he isn’t the cause célèbre to oppose the reformist Crown Prince. On the contrary, the Crown Prince desires a more inclusive Saudi Arabia and this should be welcomed.
