The coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis in Japan for new infections is worse in July than at any other time. This statistic is grim because the first known coronavirus case was in the middle of January. Equally demoralizing, the hope of early May to the middle of June is over.

Tokyo reached 266 new cases and Osaka announced 155. Meanwhile, the prefectures of Aichi, Gifu, Kyoto, and Okinawa all reached new daily highs. Hence, it is clear that Japan is entering a delicate period.

Yoshimura Hirofumi, the Governor of Osaka, is pressurizing the central government to take a more firm approach. He is also requesting local people and businesses to refrain from holding parties if numbers are more than five.

Omura Hideaki, the Governor of Aichi, is equally alarmed after announcing the highest daily number of infections. Equally important, with Aichi, Gifu, Kyoto, and Okinawa reaching new daily highs, it shows that the crisis threatens to engulf other prefectures. Indeed, even Sado Island – with a small population – announced its first-ever case since coronavirus entered Japan over six months ago.

It should be noted that fresh highs in several prefectures – and the first infection on Sado Island – sums up the shoddy government approach to encouraging internal tourism. Thus, no coincidence that even Sado Island seems hit by this.

For it is known that the individual who caught coronavirus had not left the island in recent times. However, tourists have entered and this also applies to the recent four-day holiday period lauded by the central government to rejuvenate domestic tourism.

Hideaki uttered, “We urge residents to realize that the situation is extremely severe. We are asking them to change their daily routines and avoid infection risks.”

Overall, the death toll remains roughly 1,000 people and this is low based on the size of the population. Yet, the psychological angle is enormous and soon issues with heatstroke will occur.

On top of this, the economic angle and gloomy mood in Japan are taking its toll. Therefore, the next few weeks are critical for Japan in containing the crisis – even if this means another state of emergency despite the central government loathing to do this.
