A twin terrorist attack hit Jolo in the province of Sulu in the Philippines. It is known that at least 14 people were killed in both attacks including soldiers. Therefore, the armed forces of the Philippines are on full alert in this restive part of the country.
The first explosion was a motorcycle laden with explosives. This was followed by a suicide attack that caused further panic in Jolo.
Abu Sayyaf is being blamed for both terrorist attacks that left 75 people injured and 14 dead. The main loss of life was the first terrorist attack and not the female suicide bomber.
The BBC reports, “Abu Sayyaf is one of the smallest and most violent jihadist groups in the southern Philippines, known for its kidnap-for-ransom activity and its brutality, including beheadings.”
Early last year Islamists linked to Abu Sayyaf killed over 20 people at a Roman Catholic cathedral. This took place in the same vicinity. Therefore, the armed forces are fully aware of the persistent terrorist threats that can erupt suddenly.
The armed forces and the police immediately put Jolo under lockdown.
