The military coup in Myanmar against the State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi – and her political allies – is triggering increasing protests. Hence, the internal convulsions of the military coup are still unfolding.
Protests denouncing the military coup continue in Mandalay, Naypyitaw, Yangon, and in other parts of the country. This is despite the warning of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing to not gather in large numbers.
On national state television, a tacit warning was announced. It stated, “Action must be taken, according to the law… against offenses that disturb, prevent and destroy state stability, public safety and the rule of law.”
General Min Aung Hlaing ordered the house arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint, and other leaders of the National League for Democracy (NLD). He did this after citing electoral fraud to justify the military coup. However, the election commission of Myanmar rejects the allegation of electoral fraud.
The BBC reports, “Tens of thousands gathered on Monday in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw, for the strike, with other cities such as Mandalay and Yangon also reporting significant numbers, according to BBC Burmese. The protesters include teachers, lawyers, bank officers, and government workers.”
Tighter curfews are expected along with threatening people against gathering in numbers of more than five people. Thus a gradual clampdown is being enforced in the hope of quelling public discontent. However, with the fragile democratic path being curtailed already after the military coup, it appears that protests will continue along with many areas of civil disobedience in order to restore democracy.
