Japan Art and a radiant moon at nightfall in distant times

The artist Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942) illuminated the world of Rinpa (Rimpa) art during a period of momentous changes in Japan. This relates to liberalism, nationalism, militarism, modernity, technology, and sweeping changes that altered the landscape. However, by focusing on Rinpa – even though inspired during his time in Scotland – the fusion of the old world remained within his art.
Of course, new ideas and color schemes entered his period of maturity. Thus Art Nouveau altered his connection with the old world based on experimenting with bright colors and other areas.
The contemporary artist Sawako Utsumi adores many angles of Sekka (original by Sekka above) because he bridges different art worlds. Equally, Utsumi fuses ideas from European and Japanese artists irrespective of time.
In her latest art piece titled “Radiant Nightfall Moon in Old Japan,” the homage to Sekka is abundantly obvious. However, unlike the original version, Utsumi focuses on nightfall and a radiant moon. Hence, once more, Utsumi provides her fusion of ideas and hidden meaning.
This relates to the old artistic and cultural world now being a shadow of the past for recent generations. Thus while old Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples dot the land – just like famous historical places including Kamakura, Koyasan, Kyoto, Nara, and Nikko remaining firmly in the mindset – the flows of modernity infringe more passionately for the majority.
Hence the nightfall and radiant moon represent the shadows of time. However, symbolizing that the bonds and sophistication of the old world remain. Therefore, the radiant moon, stunning deep blue nightfall, and delightful flowers are still in reach even if modernity is taking more people further away from their roots.
