The recent upsurge in coronavirus infections and deaths in Japan means that the European Union (EU) is set to close the door on travel from this country. Of course, the EU is blighted by an even worse coronavirus crisis. However, until recently, several nations outside of the EU were given certain privileges including Japan based on the low number of infections.

Yet, in the last few months, infections have increased dramatically compared with the first nine months of the coronavirus being in Japan. Naturally, the increase of coronavirus deaths in Japan followed. Therefore, despite the death toll in Japan being approximately 5,400 people, it is noticeable that the majority of deaths have occurred towards the end of last year and the first month of 2021.

Apparently, individuals with essential factors to travel will still face special exemptions. However, the tightened measures in both directions between the EU and Japan means travel will be minimal compared to the past.

Individual EU nations can independently allow open travel between their respective nations and Japan. Yet, in reality, the EU seeks a common approach to keep coronavirus variants at bay – or to limit the impact of new variants.

It further highlights the problem Japan faces in holding the Olympics. Similarly, the latest entry ban in the offing highlights the growing coronavirus crisis in Japan.
