The nation of Myanmar is on the path of strengthening democracy under the State Counsellor of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi. Yet, after mass propaganda about the crisis in Rakhine, many Western nations have condemned Myanmar and favored the mantra of the mass media and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) under the auspices of Saudi Arabia. Therefore, the powerful nations of China and the Russian Federation have provided valuable support in the chambers of the United Nations.

Of course, regional nations belonging to the Mekong Delta and the countries of Northeast Asia (China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan) – along with others including India and Singapore – have increased ties with Myanmar. Despite this, leading Western powers and the nations of the OIC have manipulated the mass media in order to lambast Myanmar and put enormous pressure on Aung San Suu Kyi. Hence, the nation of China is making the most of Western failure by strengthening ties with Myanmar.

President Xi Jinping of China is intent on enhancing economic and military ties with Myanmar. He reiterated this after meeting Senior General Min Aung Hlaing who is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of Myanmar.

The China Daily reports, “Noting that military cooperation is an important part of China-Myanmar relations, Xi said that the two armies should enhance pragmatic cooperation and build bilateral military relations on the basis of mutual trust and benefit.”

In light of the geopolitical significance of Myanmar and the continuing path of strengthening democracy under Aung San Suu Kyi, it is imperative that senior Western nations open-up to this nation. Indeed, it is in the national interest of Western nations and leading Asian powers including India and Japan to strengthen ties with Myanmar. If not, then Myanmar will be forced further into the arms of China to a higher degree.

Hence, a more reasonable approach to the crisis in Rakhine and other important issues must be addressed based on a reciprocal nature. If this is adopted by leading Western nations then this will enable Myanmar to reach out to all; irrespective if America, China, India, Japan, the Russian Federation and so forth.
