The government of Burundi needs greater international support to fight against the terrible consequences of malaria. According to government officials in Burundi, approximately 800 people have perished this year alone. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) needs to listen to people on the ground along with campaigning for greater funds to help nations that suffer continuously.

Irrespective of political tensions in Burundi, the international community must look beyond France and other nations that seek to meddle in the internal affairs of this nation. Instead, the issue is humanitarianism; therefore, past failures of various governments in Burundi over many decades – along with the WHO and other areas of international humanitarianism – must all look into why even basic measures are failing the people of Burundi.

Dr. Josiane Nijimbere, the Health Minister of Burundi, said that since 2016 just over 3,700 citizens have perished because of Malaria. On top of this, breadwinners, time lost at work for recovering people, trauma, psychological issues, the effects on the local economy in worse hit held areas, and other factors, mean that the devastation of malaria is enormous.

Worryingly, the death rate is even higher in early 2017. Hence, the urgency needed for the government to fully focus on this crisis. Similarly, the international community must do more to support Burundi and other nations like Rwanda that suffer from the horrendous effects of malaria.

Voice of America reports, According to the World Health Organization, some 8.2 million Burundians — 73 percent of the total population — were affected by malaria in 2016. More than 3,800 died.”

It is essential that President Pierre Nkurunziza and his political cabinet focus immediately on the ongoing crisis. Likewise, the international community must respond to a much higher degree. If not, then more deaths will result and the continuing drain on the economy will hinder this nation for years to come.
