Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is to announce his resignation later today because of ill health. Speculation had already emerged before his two recent visits to the hospital that he wasn’t well. Therefore, with past health issues leading to his first resignation, it seems that history is repeating itself.
The situation must be serious because of the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis. On top of this, the economy still hadn’t recovered from the last consumption tax increase. Hence, the economy – like all nations hit by coronavirus – is taking a huge hit this year.
Sadly, despite serving many years during his second term in office, he will be remembered more for resigning twice when the going got tough. Of course, if it turns out that his health is life-threatening, this won’t apply.
Yet, if it is related to his ulcerative colitis – and stress – then a sad ending. After all, it isn’t a good time to have a leadership battle given the current economic turmoil in Japan. Similarly, in recent weeks many new coronavirus highs have occurred in several parts of the country.
Abe had hoped to revise the Constitution that is based on pacifism. However, this never materialized despite Abe touting that change was in the offing. Equally, despite improving relations with the Russian Federation, neither nation budged over the territorial dispute.
Abe will give further details in the following hours about the reasons for his resignation.
