President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey is once more involved in brinkmanship and increasing regional tensions. Internationally, the attention is on the utter barbarity of ISIS (Islamic State – ISIS). However, for Erdogan, it is about crushing the Kurds in northern Syria, dictating to Iraq, and continuing the intrigues of Ankara against the government of Syria.

Astonishingly, given the atrocities and abrasiveness of ISIS, it is clear that Turkey never felt threatened by Takfiris to any degree in relation to troops being stationed in Bashiqa. Not surprisingly, Iraq, and other regional nations refuse to trust the intrigues of Turkey. After all, since the crisis began in Syria it is clear that international jihadists – including ISIS – have utilized the territory of Turkey in border areas.

The base of the Turkish armed forces in Bashiqa inside Iraq – that lies in close proximity to the stronghold of ISIS in Mosul – is clearly suspicious. Similarly, ISIS members have freely mingled in parts of Turkey and the same applies to other sectarian terrorist groups.

Hurriyet Daily says, “Turkey has insisted that it will play a role in the battle to retake Mosul from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), but Baghdad has rejected Turkey’s involvement and repeatedly called on Ankara to withdraw troops it had deployed in a camp in Bashiqa, which lies near the jihadist-held city.”

Haider al-Abadi, the Prime Minister of Iraq, is alarmed by the intrigues of Turkey. He states categorically, “We do not want war with Turkey, and we do not want a confrontation with Turkey. But if a confrontation happens, we are ready for it. We will consider [Turkey] an enemy and we will deal with it as an enemy,” he added.”

Unbelievably, the Obama administration in America and the institution of NATO continues to tolerate terrorist intrigues and the closure of media outlets in Turkey. Indeed, loyal forces in northern Syria that have been assisted by America were abandoned when Ankara’s proxies killed them. Likewise, the armed forces of Turkey have bombed forces backed by the Obama administration. Despite this, America still seeks to play the tune of Turkey under Erdogan despite the reality on the ground.

Equally alarming, the Obama administration and NATO have done little to contain Erdogan’s growing threat towards democracy internally in Turkey. This applies to persecuting Kurdish political institutions, arresting journalists, closing down countless media outlets, arresting all and sundry in Turkey based on the paranoia of Erdogan, and other brutal factors. In other words, the Obama administration and NATO are not only forsaking democracy in Turkey but both are tolerating this nation being a hotbed for international jihadists and destabilizing even the allies of America.

Turkey is still threatening to enter Iraq and Mevlut Cavusoglu, the Foreign Minister of Turkey, is upping the ante by mocking the political elites in Baghdad. He said, “If you have the strength, why did you surrender Mosul to terror organizations? If you are so strong, why has the PKK occupied your lands for years?”

The Foreign Minister continued, “You cannot even fight against a terror organization, you are weak.”

Of course, the reason behind the ongoing intimidation towards Iraq by Turkey is based on the weakness of the Obama administration and the elites within NATO. Similarly, international Takfiri terrorists have gained enormously by the intrigues of Turkey under the leadership of Erdogan. At the same time, democracy is being threatened internally in modern day Turkey. However, while all the above is continuing the Obama administration and NATO remains ineffective, thereby debasing America and NATO.
