Heatstroke deaths are continuing to mount in Tokyo and throughout other parts of Japan. It is known that at least 27 people have passed away in the last week in Tokyo from heatstroke. Therefore, fears persist that the death toll will continue during the current period.

Amazingly, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (scheduled for next year) will fall under the same period of horrendous heat. In Japan, the rainy season was more prolonged this season for the horrendous heat usually starts in late July. Thus the long summer period is a real bane for people who reside in prefectures known for extreme heat.

On top of this, the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis continues and facemasks increase the temperature even more. Hence, for embattled workers, this year is notably hard. Similarly, for poorer people with limited ventilation – or no ventilation systems – then they are prone to heatstroke.

Of the recent 27 deaths reported in Tokyo then the main factors are air condition systems and age. Thus the majority of deaths are people aged over 70 years of age and not using air condition systems – or not having one.

In total, over 50 people have died this month already from heatstroke in Tokyo. This figure will likely increase further.

Yesterday, in the prefecture of Shizuoka, the temperature reached 41.1 degrees Celsius. Therefore, many parts of Japan are suffering once more from the horrendous height of summer.
