Malnutrition is stalking the Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is blighted by millions of internal refugees and many severe health issues. This applies to the bubonic plague, Covid-19, Ebola, HIV, Malaria, Measles epidemic, and other ills. Therefore, with ethnic and religious violence in parts of the country, the World Food Programme (WFP) is extremely concerned.
Reports state that over 15 million people suffer from acute food shortages. At the same time, more children are suffering from malnutrition. Hence, the need for the international community to increase funding and support various agencies on the ground.
Voice of America reports, “The WFP says it needs $172 million to support short-term food requirements in Congo. WFP spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs told VOA her agency plans to provide food assistance this year to 8.6 million people suffering from extreme hunger, an increase of nearly two million over the record number of famished people it assisted in 2019.”
In 2020, over one million people have fled various conflicts in the eastern part of the DRC. This comes on top of millions who fled internally before this year. Thus the crisis is severe and the conflict is ongoing.
The situation is critical with approximately 3.4 million children suffering from acute malnutrition. Hence urgent funding is needed to support adults and children in dire need. Therefore, the WFP is appealing for international assistance to help extremely vulnerable people.
If adequate support doesn’t materialize then the suffering will be beyond words.
