United Kingdom Hints at Softening Stance Against Russia despite G-7 Condemnation about Ukraine Crisis

President Obama continues to sound like a Cold War leader of America when it comes to the Russian Federation. After all, it is clear that the crisis in the Ukraine is extremely complex because elites in Kiev continue to support the nationalist card at all costs. Indeed, despite the economy of the Ukraine going to ruin, it is obvious that elites in Kiev are fully focused on war and antagonizing the Russian Federation.
Leaders from America and Germany insist that sanctions must remain against the Russian Federation based on the need for Moscow to end the conflict. Yet, surely the same nations should support the same policy towards Ukrainian nationalists in Kiev? However, instead of America and Germany becoming honest brokers both nations are intent on antagonizing political elites in Moscow.
Since Crimea returned to the Russian Federation based on a political vote that widely supported reunification with mother Russia, political entities throughout the European Union (EU) and America have taken a one-sided approach to the crisis. Therefore, the G8 summit was reduced to the G7 after the Russian Federation was excluded. However, despite enormous political posturing towards Moscow, it is clear that President Vladimir Putin isn’t swayed by G7 nations because the crisis is continuing unabated.
On a positive note for the Russian Federation, it appears that the United Kingdom is gradually taking a more even-handed approach despite backing sanctions. Of course, Prime Minister Cameron of the United Kingdom is outwardly seen to be a staunch supporter of Obama but just like Japan then clearly the issue is much more complex behind the scenes.
Philip Hammond, the United Kingdom Foreign Secretary, announced a more moderate tone when asked about America deploying any forms of nuclear missile in Europe. He stressed that “We’ve got to send a clear signal to Russia that we will not allow them to transgress our red lines. At the same time we have to recognize that the Russians do have a sense of being surrounded and under attack, and we don’t want to make unnecessary provocations.”
The BBC reports: “The West accuses Russia of sending military forces into eastern Ukraine to help the rebels – a charge echoed by analysts. Moscow denies this, saying any Russian soldiers there are volunteers.”
Of course, all political leaders of the G7 will issue various statements whereby the Russian Federation will be rebuked to varying degrees. For example, America will continue with its anti-Russia rhetoric while Japan seeks a more softly approach underneath the surface.
The White stressed that America and Germany were firmly behind maintaining sanctions and obviously other nations like the United Kingdom will follow the mantra laid down by Washington. Therefore, the White House issued a statement saying: “The two leaders discussed the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and agreed that the duration of sanctions should be clearly linked to Russia’s full implementation of the Minsk agreements and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty.”
AFP (France 24) reports “The United States, the EU and Germany all expressed alarm over the renewed violence in eastern Ukraine, with Washington warning Russia it would face new punishment if the crisis escalates.”
However, while the United Kingdom remains firmly on the side of America in the crisis involving the Ukraine and the Russian Federation. It seems that elites in London don’t seek to up the ante. In this sense, Obama will note that his continuing Cold War mentality isn’t fully supported when he applies more extreme rhetoric.
